Science experiment-volcano eruption-

At Rainbow preschool, children have been learning about volcanoes. Science activities are a part of Montessori education. It is intuitive for small children to wonder how things work and why thigs are in nature. These science activities stimulate child's curiosity and give them the solid foundation for improving science literacy.

After reading the books about volcano, each child made the volcano paper. They cut out the words on the sheet and glued them on the picture.

Yesterday at the circle time, everybody sat patiently and waited for the experiment.

When the teacher poured the vineger into the horrow part of the mountain, look! it started errupting! Inside the volcano, there already were set a few tea spoon of soda poweder and food color(red).

After a while, the teacher explained the different kinds of erruption of volcanoes, which countries have big volcanoes...etc. This science experiment can be expaneded to many other areas. Children thought about the countries in the world, the substances which make up the volcano, the different types of gasses which come from the eruption, and the world climate changes.

It is the presence of gases, such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide and water vapor, that causes magma to be erupted from a volcano. Magma with less gas, such as the magma under Hawaiian volcanoes, erupt less explosively. Magma with more gas, such as the magma under Mt. Redoubt volcano, will cause more explosive eruptions.

Not only these gases cause explosive eruptions, but in high amounts they can alter the climate.
In the article I found out "The three most prominent gases emitted through volcanic eruptions - water vapor, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide - are also greenhouse gases. Historical large volcanic eruptions have been known to change the global climate. For example, the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines spewed so much greenhouse gas that global temperatures were warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter for almost two years after the eruption."

Wow, one big eruption can change the world climate for 2 years! So exciting and fun for me as well to learn science.

The ideas of hand-made musical instruments

Last Sunday, I went to the concert for children with my German family. It was very nice with story& Pictures, singing, piano, cello, clarinet and contrabass. I could see they tried very hard to involve children and it looked everybody enjoyed it.

Before and after the concert, children got the chance to play with musical instruments and I found many nice hand-made instruments! Let's have a look!

No.1; Wooden xylophone with nuts.

No.2; Variations of No.1. Just the dried branches, but they all have different sound!

No.3; Dried plants. When child shakes it, the seeds make the nice sound.

No.4; Shaker with beer bottle lids. In Bavaria, one party with beer can make 10 of them easily;-)

No.5; Maracus with various seeds, stones. Child puts whatever they like in the cylinder and makes experiments of different sounds.

I thought all of them are excellent and a lot of fun!

Montessori Environment

The new school is getting really together! Every day, it's such an excitement to see something becomes complete. The new door (specially designed by Iris) arrived, and the walls got the final paint, the bathroom tiles got ready...etc. At night in bed, I sometimes imagine how the classroom will look like with all the furniture and get too excited to sleep. Well, still the biggest part like setting the materials, deciding how to use the space, which furniture to put where, is remained. We take a lot of considerations for all these small things as we believe the importance of environment.

Today, I'll write a little bit about Montessori environment.
We often use the word "prepared environment" to call the classroom. This word means the environment/classroom is carefully prepared to satisfy child's human tendencies, sensitive periods, and also lead him to be a peaceful person.

Briefly speaking, prepared environment is a place of simplicity, beauty and order, the place to support child's maximum development.
There are Montessori materials which meets children's needs, are great in design and quality.

(Picture; a boy working with binomical cube, sensory learning the different shapes and this is an indirect preparation for math, algebra, cube roots (a+b+C)³)

There are also "prepared" adults (Montessori director/directness) who have scientific knowledge about child's development, observe children in what they are interested in and link them to the materials.
One big thing to note about Montessori environment is that child is allowed to have freedom in the classroom.

The prepared environment is a mixture of all of them noted above (or more things), so even if the school has all the materials, still the environment can be non- Montessori if it misses other elements. When our new school got ready, I'll report how we set up the classroom.

At last, in order to prevent the misunderstanding of Montessori education, I'll finish this article with clarifying what is freedom in Montessori environment.

Freedom in Montessori environment doesn't mean that children can do whatever they want to.
"To be free means to be in control of self, to be able to do what one chooses to do, not what one's feelings or illogical thoughts of the moment may dictate." (Paula Polk Lillard, Montessori Today)

To make the child have such a discipline, the adults attitude has to be consistent from the child's earliest years on. We need to set the limit, be very firm and fair. We give the young children choices of red shirt or blue shirt, but the child is not free to wear nothing. He has to make the choice. In the primary class, the children may use the pink tower or dressing frame, but the child is not free to disturb others who are busy working. In elementary class, the children may choose their topics of research and their working companions, but they are not free to waste their days in aimless activity or chatting with their friends. As you see, child has freedom in the environment, but as well as limit.

To be free, first of all, the child has to be able to take care of himself, take the responsibility for himself. We often use the phrase "take the responsibility", but not everyone can take the responsibility for everything. First, we all start from taking the responsibility for self. Later in life, people take the responsibility for the partner, then the family, the community, the city, the country, then the world. I think that life is about widening the range of responsibility that one can take, and one has to have the ability and the will to do that.

The adults in the environment should be self-disciplined and responsible, because we model what it means to be free to the children. Freedom together with responsibility and limits is one of the key elements in Montessori education, and the meaning of freedom is quite different from the ordinary one.

(Paula Polk Lillard, Montessori Today)

(Picture; Two boys learning European countries and flags.)
