Books

During Obon holidays, I got plenty of time for reading and finished several books I wanted to read for a long time.
The is a book "Children who had Montessori education" written by a university professor who gathered more than 1000 letters from children graduated Montessori school and their parents. She wrote that she hadn't planned to publish a book, but she was so astonished to see the common things written in these letters that she felt she had to write about them. The book talks about the common traits Montessori children have like independence, love for learning, being good at teaching other children...etc which all Montessorian can expect, but reading the real letters from Montessori parents saying how their child overcome the difficulty of life and how they think Montessori education prepared their child for life is very interesting and encouraging to me.

The second book is "Coaching for mothers". This is an introduction book for getting the idea of coaching and it has nice examples which make adults reflect if our words or behaviours are proper to coach children.
The story which stuck in my head most is the one from a teacher talked about children who cried for half an hour in the staff room asking her to open the old juice bottle.

"When we can't accept what the child want us to do, adults get tense and our heart becomes stiff. I notice myself being a wall shuttering child. But I am not a wall. I am a helping hand for the confused child who are wondering how to accept the fact that the teacher can't do it. How easy to forget it."

I fully understood what she meant. Adults don't need to jump on the the wall so that the wall gets higher for children. We just need to stand next to the child accepting the child's feeling and just need to point the wall and check it together. This story was a very good reminder to me.

The third book I liked a lot is the "Q&A Health" written by one of the prominent Japanese doctor working in cancer hospital. There are hundreds of questions concerning health like "Do we need to drink 2l of water every day?" "Is it true that brown rice can prevent cancer?" "Should meat be avoided to be healthy?" and the doctor answers them.
At the end of the book, he told that there is no method that works perfectly to prevent cancer. These 50 years, he has been seeing patients with cancer and there is no common life habits or traits of patients he can find. So, he said it's dangerous to decide "Doing ~ makes people healthy". He is over 80 now and still being healthy working in the hospital, what he recommend us is hearing our body and follow it. There are thousands of ways and ideas to be healthy and it's important to try them. But it's also important to remember that the method you try may not suit you. Even if a famous doctors says people need 2 l of water to be healthy, for the one whose water circulation is weak it just does harm. " Always observe the body" he said.

I thought what he said can apply to education. Even though the majority of people say "~ methods is good for child.", it's important to observe one's child if that really makes his day happy and if parents can connect with that methods well. There exist many educational methods and this diversity is precious I feel. As far as I see the area around Tokyo, it's so fortunate that people can chose the one they like.

The very first magazine which featured Montessori education was published last week in Japan! This magazine shows many aspects of Montessori education. Probably this is the first time Montessori education got so much attention in Japan. I'm very happy about it. The magazine has articles of AMI trainer and several Japanese Montessori teachers talking about activities inside & outside the classroom. This is such a helpful tool when I need to explain what I have learned these years!

The Edible Schoolyard

I've just finished reading the book "The Edible Schoolyard" and got so excited to know how farming, harvesting and cooking can integrate to school cariculum. Alice Waters, the founder of Chez Panisse Foundation, started this Edible schoolyrad project. In the book, she said she studied Montessori and had an experience of working in the Montessori school! How cool!

I feel Montessori idea and farm environement can create multiple effect. Growing vegetables, taking care of them, cooking and eating them can teach children so many things including how plants grow, natural cycle and seasonality, varieties of colours in nature, positive interaction with adults and other children...etc.

Here is some information about what the Edible Schoolyard is.

The Edible Schoolyard (ESY) consists of a thriving one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, a public school for grades 6, 7, and 8, in Berkeley, California.
Each student at King Middle School participates in the Edible Schoolyard. Garden classes introduce them to the origins of food, plant life cycles, community values, and the pleasures of work, while kitchen classes allow them to prepare and eat delicious, nutritious, seasonal dishes made from produce they have grown in the garden.
Fall 2008 marked the opening of the Dining Commons, a new lunchroom for King School. Designed to engage students, the Dining Commons features on-site composting and recycling stations and real tableware. The Dining Commons presents myriad opportunities to connect garden, kitchen, classroom, and lunchroom experiences.

Mission & Goals
The mission of the Edible Schoolyard is to create and sustain an organic garden and landscape that is wholly integrated into the school’s curriculum, culture, and food program.
ESY involves students in all aspects of farming the garden and preparing, serving, and eating food as a means of awakening their senses and encouraging awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land.

Guiding Principles
The following principles guide the Edible Schoolyard program.

Participatory: Classes in the kitchen and garden model sustainable practices and engage children in hands-on lessons that connect food, health, and the environment.

Integrated: The program is linked to the academic curriculum through math, science, and the humanities.

Shared: ESY creates opportunities for children to share a family-style meal together with teachers and adult volunteers.

Delicious: ESY serves food that is local, organic, and seasonal.

Beautiful: Our program is designed to inspire personal and social responsibility, and to serve as a model for other schools.
