It's getting more and more spring in Munich! Magnolia at Montessori kindergarten (where I often go to observe the class) is beautiful.
Last week, one of my friends from Montessori 3-6 course, Shehara, did a cultural presentation of her own country, Sri Lanka.

先週は、一緒にモンテッソーリ3－6歳のコースを取っているスリランカ人の友人、シハラが園で文化紹介をしてくれました。
She prepared the beautiful picture cards of Sri Lanka and the national flag. The Asian map you see on the mat is one of the Montessori materials named puzzle map. Let me explain a bit about puzzle map, which I like a lot.
スリランカの国旗、国歌、衣装、街の様子や自然、たくさんの写真を準備してくれました。マットの上にあるアジア地図は「パズルマップ」と呼ばれるモンテッソーリ教材の一つ。
In Montessori education, there are several principles how to present the materials and one of them is "General to Specific". We give a sense of whole before exploring the details. So first, we show children the globe explaining this is the planet where we live. Then we move on to each continent, then countries, states, cities and finally to towns.
So, the teacher started talking about the continent where Sri Lanka belongs and asked one of the oldest children to take out Sri Lanka from the Asia puzzle map.
このパズルマップ、私の好きな教材の一つです。モンテッソーリの教材を子供に紹介していくにはいくつか原則があるのですが、そのうちの一つが「全体から部分へ」。細部を見る前に、まず全体を子供たちに体験させます。今回の地理に関して言えば、先生はまず「これが私たちの住んでいる地球よ」と地球儀を見せます。その後、子供たちはワールドマップ（上の写真）のパズルで地球には大陸があることを知ります。そして、その各大陸の中には国が。そして、国の中には市、町、村、、、と徐々に細部に降りていくのです。
今回先生は「スリランカは地球のどの大陸？」「近くにはどんな国があるかな？」と子供たちに質問することから始めました。答え、国の名前がポンポンと飛び出してくるのは、さすがモンテッソーリの子供たち。

It's amazing how long the cloth is!
なんて長い布でしょう！子供たちも「こんなに長いのどうやって着るの～？」と興味津々。
She even gave us a dancing lesson. A lot of fun!

Then, we had Sri Lankan tea. First we compared the tea leaves Shehara brought with the leaves of mint from the garden.
シハラがスリランカの紅茶を持ってきてくれました。スリランカ紅茶の葉っぱを見て、ある男の子。「ミントティーのミントの葉と違う。」さっそく庭からミントの葉を取ってきて、みんなで比べっこ。
We smelled the tea.

Then we drank it. You can see how much we give the sensory experiences to children. Children see the leaves, touch, smell, and taste them. When I start writing why senses are so important for children, I can keep writing for hours, so today I'll shut my mouth. Whole impression which children get from this experience would have ended in different if she just had shown the picture of tea.
味見。紅茶の葉を見て、触って、匂いを嗅いで、味見して、、、。色々な感覚を使って、紅茶を楽しみました。モンテッソーリでは「感覚教育」をとても大事にしています。なぜならば… 書き始めると止まらないので次回に改めます。

Yummy white curry with lentils, and fried rice with vegetables.
It was such a nice day! I feel much closer to Sri Lanka after this presentation and what a rich experience for children. Now they have such a concrete idea of Sri Lanka.
レンズ豆のカレーとごはん。子供にも大人にも大人気。私自身、このプレゼンテーションの後、スリランカがぐっと近い国になりました。でも、子供たちにとってはなおのこと。「いつかスリランカ行ってみたい！」「スリランカのお料理っておいしいね」なんて声があちこちから。異なる文化を知ることで、子供たちの世界の見方、異なる他者の受け止め方、受容する力が育っていくのではないでしょうか。
