Seminar of outside activities for children

Last weekend, I was in the mountain of Nagano to attend the intensive seminar of child outside activities. Actually we leaned the method of "Mulle(earth) class" which originally comes from Sweden. This seminar offered 20 hours of course in two days including theory and activities.

In the theory part, we learned the child development from birth to six year old, (which was a good review of Montessori course for me!) and activities we can offer to them. The lecturer stressed that it's so important to start going out to the nature even from the start of life. She showed the picture above and explained that each step leads to the next.
1)One spends time comfortably, with secure feeling in nature.
2)One enjoys the nature.
3)One observes the nature.
4)One understands the connections, relations in nature.
5)One knows how human behavior affects the nature.
6)One contribute to protect the nature through action.

I, having grown up in the city and missed or spent very short time of each step, found these steps extremely important. Since I got together with my husband who grew up in the farm, I've been feeling how different attitude he has to the nature and how deeply from heart he enjoys and takes care of it. I feel my approach to the nature is more like going down these steps from the top. It was great that the seminar made me realize this and I've just started to climb the first step of this stair in the farm.

In the activity part, each of us got a loupe, which made me fascinated with checking everything around me. How beautiful a moss is! How neat a spider is! Just having a loupe made being outside a great adventure!

While we walk in the mountain, our lecturer explained the name of the plants we found, how they grow, what's the role of them in the nature. As he explains, he picked up some flowers and showed me how to teach children the names. It's almost like a 3-period-lesson in Montessori class! When children become sure of these names, teacher picks up one child to be it. The rest of the children has to decide one flower or leaf for the symbol for the group while "it" is away. When the child who is it comes back, he has to guess and point the flower he thinks the symbol. He asks the group "Is this the symbol?" Other children answers,"No, (flower name) is not our symbol." or "Yes, (flower name) is the symbol." and take turn to be it.
The important thing is that we don't force one child who is it to say the name. It'll be more relaxing for children and no embarrassment for ones who take time to remember names.

Another game with children we can play is that we pick up things like stone, twig, several different kinds of leaves, and put them in a bag. Child puts a hand in and guess what's inside. Isn't it a mystery bag in Montessori class, just an outside version!?

Another fun game is the group of children gesturing the animals we saw during the walk like butterfly, bird, spider, dragonfly and the child who is it has to guess what animal/insect it is. When he guesses correctly, he catches one child and that child becomes it.

We also had a lecture of outdoor cooking. It was so nice baking bread with fire. We used bamboo tree to hold the bread dough! What a nice idea!
Nagano is famous for delicious apples, so we used 100% fresh apple juice instead of water to make the dough.

The fresh bread tasted sweet and I enjoyed the subtle smell of bamboo as well.
These two days were such a good refreshment for me. Getting to know the forest kindergarten teachers who are very creative and loving was a great gift, too! I like Montessori approach to children very much, but whatever the educational philosophy is, the personality of the teachers are the most influential factor to children, I believe.

Workshop of making ketchup

Recently we can constantly harvest 50-60kg of tomatoes every day. Most of them are sold at shops around here, but the ones which are too ripe or whose form is too bad are kept at the farm. We've been thinking how to use up all the tomatoes and decided to turn them into ketchup! Some of our friends came to the farm yesterday and joined my experiment to make ketchup.

First, we peeled the skin of the tomatoes. Then, we took out of the seeds. This time we used 8kg of tomatoes, so it took time!

After that, tomatoes were put into the mixer.

We were all surprised with the color! So pink! We were a bit nervous if this pink juice turns to be ketchup or not. When all of tomatoes were done, we added grated onion and some chili and pepper. After an hour, the tomato juice got less than half, so we put salt, sugar, bay lief, clove, dried thyme, dried sage, and cinnamon.

We waited again for an hour and took out all the spices. The colour really got red and the juice got thick and heavy. The taste is super-delicious!!!!:-) I'm not sure if I'd like to add this ketchup for the farm's product as it takes a lot of time to make, but surely I'll keep making it for the family and friends.

Workshop: Mobile making

(Made by my friend,Yuji. Isn't it super-beautiful!?)
In the festival, I held a small workshop of mobile making. Since it was very windy, we didn't manage to make mobiles, but I got a chance to talk about Montessori education a bit.
The content I talked are

1) Who is Maria Montessori?
2) What is Montessori Education?
*The education given to the children on condition that each child has its own
power to grow inside them.
*The idea of "Sensitive Period"
*What are the sensitive periods in the first three months?
-Language
-Senses
-Movement
3)How can we aid the development of 0-3 months old?
*Mobile
*The things we consider when we make mobiles

At the exhibition place, I put a DVD player with DVD "What is the Montessori toddler community?" published by NAMTA. I highly recommend this DVD for anyone who is planning to open Infant community. Since in Japan, Infant community is so rare that people have difficulty imagining how things work only with 0-3 years old in a house. It's a perfect DVD to show the parents what it is and how Montessori directress work for small children.

In the workshop, I talked about how children develop in a year. I'd like to add a bit more information here concerning it. (Last night, I finished reading the last chapter of this wonderful book "what's going on in there?-How the Brain and Mind Develop in the First Five Years of Life." by Lise Eliot, Ph.D, and there are so many facts of child development and tips for child rearing!!)
Well, this time I mainly report from chapter 2:"The Basic Biology of Brain Development"(p.11-39) and chapter 6:"Motor Milestones" (p.260-289)

What I'd like to add today is how the baby's motor skills are achieved.
First of all, they are connected with the issue how the brain develops to perform certain movements.

(参照:"What's going on in there?" by Lise Eliot, 2章、6章)

The human baby is born with billions of nerve cells, or neurons, each of which is shaped much like a tree. The picture shows a neuron of newborn(left) and of adult(right). Each neuron has denderites which receives input from other neurons, and a trunk, or axon which can be very long and branches out to relay information to the next neurons in its circuit.
Within each neuron, information is transmitted electrically by brief impulses. When the impulse arrives at the end of each axon branch, the information must cross a gap, the synapse, to be transmitted to the next neuron in the circuit.

*What is amazing to me is that the neurogenesis (producing neurons and glila from neuroepithelial cells) reaches a peak in the seventh week of pregnancy, and mostly completed by eighteen weeks. The basic building blocks of our brains are all formed by just four months of pregnancy! AND, even more surprising is that these neurons will survive as the baby does-to experience his/her grandchildren!)

When the baby is born, the neurons are already there, but they are not connected at all. "With just a tiny axon, a few short dendritic branches, and virtually no synaptic connections, they cannot do anything."(p.26)
Synapse formation, synaptogenesis happens immediately after being born. We can see how synaptogenesis goes during the first two years of life. *No new neurons are added after birth.
According to the book, "At its peak, some 15,000 synapses are produced on every cortical neuron, which corresponds to a rate of 1.8 million new synapses per second between two months of gestation and two years after birth!")

This is an astonishing number, but actually during infancy and early childhood, the cerebral cortex produces synapses about twice as many as it will eventually need.
"Brain wiring involves intricate dance between nature and nurture. Genes direct the growth of axons and dendrites to their correct approximate locations, but once these fibers start linking together and actually functioning, experience takes over, reshaping and refining these crude circuits to customize each child's hard ware to his/her unique environment."(p.29)

The brain forces the synapses to compete, which leads to the selection of the most useful synapses. Synapses that are rarely activated will wither or die. There is a data that children lose 20 billion synapse per day between early childhood and adolescence.
"Lacking adequate electrical activity, they lose the race, and the circuits they were trying to establish-for flawless Russian, perfect pitch, and exquisite backhand, a deep reverence for nature, healthy self-esteem-never come to be." (p.32)

At the same time when the dendrites grow and synapses get refined, one more critical event in neuronal development, myelination happens.
In adults, the axons of most neurons are coated with a fatty substance, myelin, that acts as an electrical insulator and is essential to proper information flow. The wires in the brain are packed closely together, so the myelin sheathes the fibers or axons to prevent scrambling the information each is transmitting. After this myelination, there is no risk of leaking the information in the way to the endpoint, which means people can move one's body at one's own will.

The babies' motor skills get acquired along the brain becomes matured which means getting wired up and myelinated. The order of this motor development shows the order of the brain (the areas which are in charge of these motor skills) maturation.

So, this book clearly explained that the timing when various motor skills emerge depends on neuro-mascular maturation. It's not possible to make child stand up when there is not yet necessary circuits made.
However, the author of this book emphasizes the importance of helping children with making him/her acquire the movement by practicing provided that it's done at the right time.

"Babies do improve their motor skills much as adults do- as a result of diligent practice. New skills, such as walking independently, don't suddenly emerge out of nowhere but gradually build out of prior, simpler abilities-kicking, standing, and walking with support- after weeks or months of trying." (p.276)

Also from the experiment she did for twin siblings, she says
"Even though deliberate training did not accelerate the mastery of skills like walking or stair-climbing, in the long run it did end up increasing those twins confidence and interest in motor skills, as compared with their untrained siblings. So while it may not affect the timing of motor milestones, the act of moving itself, especially when encouraged by an enthusiastic adult, does contribute to a child's ultimate success at physical activities." (p.277)

I see the motor development is a blend of both nature and nurture.

Montessori workshop for 2.5 years old

Since last week, I've been taking care of twin girls, 2.5 years old at home for several hours a day. They are the nieces of one of our farm staffs and because of twins mother's health condition, they happen to live in our neighbourhood for a few weeks. As we don't have a Montessori classroom yet in the farm, I made one of the rooms child-safe and put several materials for them.
For them, all the sockets in the room are covered or hid. No small objects/valuable or dangerous things are within the reach of them. It made taking care of them so easy as I don't need to say "Don't go there." "Don't touch it."

I also prepared some furniture (desk, chair) and cutlery in child size.IKEA offered us some inexpensive materials, and also hundred yen (1US$) shop is very helpful in Japan. In the picture, you can compare the size of mugs for child and for adult. Having the cutlery of right size is necessary to respect children, I think. How bad if you need to use the mug almost as big as your face and if somebody nag at you when you spill some water.

Twin girls likes opening and closing activity so much. First, I gave them the boxes whose lids are taken by pulling up. Then, I added some other things which need to be twisted or slided to open. Also the small box has lid of many shapes; circle, square, rhombus, pentagon. They enjoyed matching the box and lid after mixing all of them.

When twins care-taking lady came to pick them up, she was surprised to see how quiet they can be. I always feel eager to tell people about Montessori theories like sensitive periods, the absorbent mind, etc, but so far I succeeded to control myself not to overwhelm them by lecturing those fascinating theories.
First, I feel adults around children need to see them behaving differently, being very calm & quiet, acting independently, and smiling satisfactory. I'm trying to convey Montessori idea little by little, every day, asking questions how they are at home, what mothers are doing for them. Except when they are totally against Montessori idea, I often acknowledge what they do at home and tell what Montessori said about it. Sometimes, I suggest very openly new ideas which they can try at home.
The very first work for Montessori school might be building trust between parents and teachers. Who listens to the stories of one you don't trust? Also it's true that people don't like to be close to one who criticize you all the time.
When I have my Montessori group in the future, I'll start with inviting parents and children to the events in the farm like barbecuing, harvesting vegetables, etc.

Our cat, KOROSUKE is a keen observer of my Montessori group:-)

Workshop for Montessori material-Dancer Mobile-

Last Saturday night, I organized the small workshop of Montessori environment for 0-6 months and my first dearest participants, Risa and Yuji tried the Dancer mobile.

Materials:
*Hologram paper or Shiny ORIGAMI paper in 2 colors (ex. Silver and blue)
*Thread and needle
*Approximately 90cm of doweling
*Pattern
*glue (to fix the knot on the doweling)

Construction
1)Trace and cut the shapes, separate into the different dancers
2)Cut dowelling 1 piece-35cm, 2 pieces-20cm
3)With a needle and silk thread, connect the head, arms and legs of each dancer leaving enough space so each can rotate.
4)Attach one dancer to each end of the shorter dowels on approximately 12cm thread.
5)Attach the shorter pieces to the longer piece of dowelling, balance and hang
6)Put a drop of glue on each knot.

This mobile should be hung 30-35cm from the baby’s eyes as his eyesight is still on development. 30-35 cm is almost the same distance as Mother’s breast to face.

Mobiles are great help to babies. Before the birth, when they are in mother’s womb, they listen to mother’s voice, move their arms, touch themselves…they have been developing themselves. After 10 months in mother’s womb, they are finally out of it and need to adapt to the completely new environment. It’s their first time to experience gravity, big noise, light, and the way to take in nutrition, the way to breathe, the way to keep the temperature…etc are different. Right after the birth, they are busy exploring the new environment and for the first few months, they use their eyesight to explore the world. Imagine the baby who is kept in the cradle with bars which hinder his vision, who can see only white wall and ceiling in the hospital. It must be boring! It may be difficult to bring mobiles into hospitals (in Japan), but surely you can try to make environment which aids newborn's development. Mobile is one of the necessary items.

Mobile gives children the visual stimulation. The points we should consider about mobile is 1) simple 2) color should be high in contrast 3) geometric shapes tend to catch baby’s attention. This dancer mobile keeps on moving softly and reflects light which changes dancer’s color.
When I observed babies, I found out the different reactions to different mobiles. This dancer mobile was one of the most popular ones and I highly recommend to all the parents to have one!

In the farm, I’m planning to continue hand-making workshops for Montessori materials. Especially for 0-3 years old, there are many things we can enjoy making by ourselves, and I like sharing what I learned & exchanging opinions.
How peaceful it was to see Risa&Yuji making mobile together and having fun! Their expected baby must have been happy, too:-)
