Sound Pouches

My friend, Jo, made the set of sound pouches for the classroom. Oh, so pretty! I went through all the pouches saying, "What a nice combination of colors!", "Such a pretty button!", "Very creative she is." and spent an hour or so. Still today I can't stop looking at them. They are just too lovely.

These pouches are for keeping the small objects which are starting from the sound of the letter on the pouch. For example, the pouch of g could have objects like guitar, goose, glass. For children who are learning the sound of the letter, it'll be such a fun activity to open the pouch and find what are inside. Surely now I enjoy sorting my collection of small objects into the pouches.

Sandpaper letters in Japanese

It's been my dream to get some materials from MATSUMOTO company and here I got my HIRAGANA sandpaper letters from them! They are absolutely beautiful and sand is not too rough so children don't need to worry about losing their finger print;-) The price is not something I can pay easily from my pocket money, but after touching their neat work, I feel it's reasonable price. I can't wait to try them with children.

I found this nice video which shows a Montessori 3-6 classroom. This is a perfect video for people who joined the open house last week in the farm. I didn't have any pictures or video to show them how actually children work with materials. Though it's in English, I found it very useful for my mother/father and child group!

Topponcino

Here comes my Topponcino report! Topponcino is a kind of cusion which is used to carry a baby. It is such a convenient item as it can be used in many situations. You can use it when you hold your baby for sleeping, take her to the bath, pass her to your family or your friends. As a baby spends a lot of time Topponcino, she becomes familier to it and starts feeling secure on it.

Materials:
-Bedpad (I used old wool blanket which I washed with cold water to prevent shrinking)
-cotton cloth for covering bedpad
-cotton cloth for the final cover

I made the paper pattern looking at the Topponcino I made in the Montessori course in Sweden. You can make it a bit bigger or smaller. I think the most important thing is that you feel comfortable carrying it and it's not too small for a baby.

First, I folded the blanket and cut it out according to the paper pattern. I put some cotton inside the wool pieces so that it becomes soft enough for a baby.

Here I made the cover for wool pieces. When you make this cover, don't forget that you cut 1~1.5cm away from the pattern. Also, you need to leave one side of the cover open to put the wool pieces in.

When the cover is done, put the wool pieces in and sew the part of the cover which is open. Then, fix the inside and cover. I made 5 big stitches as you can see in the picture.

I made the final cover using my pillow case I bought in Hemtex located in Varberg, Sweden! This cloth reminds me a lot of my life up there:-) Again, when you make the final cover, don't foreget to cut a few centimeters away from the paper pattern. Also, I made the lower part of the cover straight, not U shape as the pattern. My idea is leaving the very bottom open and putting the velcros so that we can change the cover when it's necessary.

It's done! I put two velcros down inside the cover. Now I see my cat is bigger than a baby!

Some tips for supporting children at home

When I'm asked to give some advice for mothers who have small children at home, I always take the position that people should decide by themself at the end what is suitable for them, their farmily and their children. I make it clear that what I say is from my Montessori background and my personality, and there is no need to follow what I say.(It may be different in other part of the world, but in Japan, we have the tradition to follow what authority says.) What is important is children should be happy at home, which means parents should be happy and comfortable as well! There are many different ways to reach it.

What I often talk with mothers are...
(Reference: "Children who are not yet peaceful" Donna Bryant Goertz)

1.Prepare every room of your home so your child can participate fully in family life.

For example, in the kitchen, you can make the lower shelf available for child. He can keep his plates and cutlaries there and can set his table by himself. How about preparing some steps so that the child can wash vegetables with you at the sink and help you with peeling, cutting them.
In the living room, how about making lower book shelf available for your child so that he can keep his books and read it while his father is reading newspaper? You can keep the child size chair next to yours.

2.Include the child in plans.

For example, before you take your child to the appliance store with you to buy a new refregirator, you can show her the features you are looking for. You can talk to the child according to her age like "I'm looking for the white refrigerator. It should have three doors to open." If she understands numbers well, you can also talk about the price you're willing to pay.
A little bit of preparation before the errands makes the shopping enjoyable for both of you. Also, we should look at child's age how long she can be fine with errands.

3.Treat child's behavior as "in process", and developmental, never simply as good or bad.

This point, I also have to keep in mind. It's easily forgotten, but I'm trying.

P.128. "Notice every increment of improvement and acknowledge it. Avoid praise and stick to acknowledgement: "I see you threw your socks in the laundry. That's what I call responsible. One day you'll be putting your shoes on the shoe mat." "I noticed when you were so angry at Sandy you yelled instead of hitting. That shows real impulse control. Soon you'll simply turn and walk away. One day you'll choose the right time to confront him and the right words to tell how you feel." Don't nag at and insult your child. Don't notice every fault and ignore improvements."

The book "The children who are not yet peaceful" suggests family life shoud include as many of following elements as possible. (p.122) I picked up ones which are suitable for environment for 0-6 years old.

- A slow paced lifestyle with long hours of sleep on a regular schedule, a nutritious diet high in protein and fresh fuits and vegetable, plenty of exercises, and a generous amount of time in nature.

-Someone to behold the child's face with joy, hold her, hug her, and treasure her for herself alone.

-Someone to read books aloud.

-Someone to recite poetry every day.

-Someone to sing every day, a new song each week.

-Someone to tell delightful stories of the child's own life.

-An atmosphere of open curiosity and inquiry, in which everyone in the family treasures learning.

-Responsibility for caring for himself and his own things as well as contributing to meal preparation and the care of the house, garden, and pets.

-Parents who say no cheerfully and mean it.

-Parents who wait until their children are in bed to listen to music, watch movies, play computer games, and watch TV programs, even the news, that are not appropriate to the children's ages or that would give children more media hours than is best for their development.

-Parents who give the child time to develop his learning and behavior, in his own style, at his own rate, rather than define him for all the time by assigning a label.

Dear my soon-to-be-parents friends, again it's up to you if you'd take in these suggestions or not. I just hope you enjoy finding different ideas for you and your family.

Math Materials

3.5 days before the exam. I feel I can’t practice with materials anymore. Since last few weeks, I’ve been so intensively working and now I even don’t want to see them. Probably it’s good to have a few days of rest before the exam. All my needs of sensorial experiences I missed when I was small are fulfilled, I guess.

Today, I’m going to write about the last area of Montessori materials, Math.

Maria Montessori didn’t include math in her original children’s house first, but she soon realized that child loves counting and thrives on order. She developed the math area based on her observation of child’s needs. She also believed that all human were born with mathematical mind. It’s almost like a human tendency which works harmoniously with other tendencies such as order, abstraction, and exactness. Historically mathematical skills were essential for human evolution. Early humans needed to be able to estimate, measure, count, calculate in order to, for example, build the shelter for living. In the classroom, I can see children’s mathematical mind is working as they love joining the activities which need exactness and sequencing.

Math in Montessori environment is a specialized sensorial experience. It’s almost like an extension of sensorial area. Each material is materialized abstraction, so children can manipulate and see the process of mathematics which I found beautiful and fascinating. Surely I’m enjoying math as much as children in the kindergarten.

Math is divided into 6 groups. There is a pattern of presentation. We always begin with concrete materials that allow for exploration and practice so the child can abstract the given concept.

Group1: Numbers 1-10
In this group, child starts counting different objects from 1-10. After handling the concrete objects, the symbols (numbers) are introduced. Here are some examples of material.

(Number rods)

This material introduces the concept of quantities of 1-10.
Child learns the names of numbers and sees the sequence of numbers.

(Spindle Box)

It has compartments numbered 0-9. The child counts the loose quantities this time. He now experiences these numbers in a different way with this counting. Also the concept of 0, having no quantity, is introduced here.

Group2: Decimal System and Operations

In order to understand decimal system, we must have thorough base of 1-10. If we have 10 of one category, then it bumps up to the next quantity. This continues until infinity. In this group, we present enough for the child to grasp the pattern.

(First tray)

We offer the concept of decimal system using four different categories, and will deal with 1-9999.
We start with concrete material so that child can hold the quantities in hands and he gets the strong impression of one unit versus one thousand. In the presentations, we emphasize that “ten of these makes one of those.” We’ll demonstrate the relationship between next categories.

(Number)

After child gets the experience handing beads, we give the symbols (numbers)

(Operation:Addition)

When child becomes able to associate beads and symbols, we introduce the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. In this stage, we give a strong sensorial impression of what the operation means by handling large numbers.

(Stamp Game)

After plenty of practice with golden beads, child moves on to stamp game. He repeats the operations with stamps this time, but stamps are more abstract than beads. This material gives the child a chance to practice and repeat the operations. At this stage, he starts to record the answer.

Group 2 is a big area in math. It depends on the child, but may take more than a year to go through.

Group 3: Teens and Tens
In this group, we focus on numbers 11-99 so that we can clarify the language.

(Teen Beads)

The child will see in a sensorial way that the teens are a 10 and another quantity.
He learns the name for 11-19.

(Chains)

The child practices counting with chains. Now he is able to count sequentially to 100.
The chains are divided into 2 kinds. One is called “short-chain or square chain” and the other one is called “long-chain or cubic chain” The end number of bead has square number or cubic number.

Group 4: Memorization
Memorization is introduced at a time when the child is comfortable with the four operations and numbers. We have not brought attention to memorization before- it is introduced gently now.

(Addition chart)

Group 5: Passage to Abstraction
Abstraction means being able to do problems in our head, with pencil and paper. This group will assist the child in getting to this point.

(Small Bead Frame)

This frame is used for addition and subtraction. According to our trainer, eventually child stops using the material as he finds out he can do it quicker without it!
After this frame, child can move on to large bead frame which has 7 digits.

Group 6: Fractions
(Fractions)

These materialized abstractions are from on whole up to the tenth family. With this, child gets the sensorial impressions of fraction and understands the concept:” equivalent parts of a whole”. The child can see this and prove it with the material. We give the language and the symbols (how we write), and finally we introduce operations. During manipulation some children discover mathematical facts such as 2/6 is the same as 1/3 (equivalency).

Mathematics is fun!

Aprons

In between practicing materials, we are busy thinking and discussing what we can make by ourselves when we open our own school in the future. Definitely we can make aprons!

In the classroom, children as well as adults wear an apron quite often. The activities with water, or polisher have an apron already in the material box. The purposes of having an apron are protecting clothes from getting dirty, and guiding the child with its color. For example, table washing activity has a blue mat, blue jug, blue basins and a blue apron. When the child needs to replace the wet towel, he can easily recognize which towel to take. Color helps the child to get oriented in the classroom.

In my training center, there are several kinds of children's & adults' aprons. My friend and I found it nice to have different kinds of aprons in the classroom as child gets to know different ways of fastening or tying, and they are merely pretty and at least I get motivated to wear it!

This is the basic apron for children. Each activity has different color: red, yellow, blue, green, purple, white...etc. I like seeing colours in the classroom.

This apron's back is shorter than front part. Very unique!

Child can try buttoning and bow-tying with this apron.

Very basic shape, but beautiful pattern on it. I'm already excited to make an apron with Japanese traditional patterns when I get home.

This is my favorite apron. So pretty! I like the pocket, gather, how the strings are attached...such a neat work! If you are interested in the measurement of the aprons for 3-6 class, you can click the picture below. My friend made the drawing.

The measurement of first 3 are for children, and the last one (right bottom one) is for adult.

Language Materials

2.5 weeks before the exam. My mind doesn’t stop running even at night! It’s not only because I’ll have a big exam, but also because my mind and soul are busy preparing me to leave here. Hard to admit, but I’m leaving Munich soon.

Today, I’ll write about Language materials in Montessori classroom.

Language is strongly connected with human tendency. We, human beings, are not solitary creatures. We must express ourselves and be able to understand the feelings of others and communicate in order to function within human societies.
The sensitive period for language starts before birth (the baby already picks up the phoneme of his language in mother’s uterus) and continues over 6 years old.
0~3.5 years old are in the sensitive period for speaking, 3.5~4.5 years old are for writing, 4.5~5.5 years old are for reading.

(Speaking)
First, let’s have a look at the speaking area. For child to be able to speak, he needs to have following things.
1) Ability to hear
2) Function of the vocal organs
3) Language directed at the child
4) Desire to speak

With 3), 4), we can help children in the classroom. In the class, we converse with them, tell real stories (for example, what I had for breakfast, what I did last weekend, the things I experienced when I was small), read poems, sing songs, and we have objects, cards to enrich child’s vocabulary.
For child to speak, he needs opportunity and self-confidence. Practical life exercises (especially Grace&Courtesy lessons), sensorial materials are great help for him to be confident in the classroom. Also the directress treats child with respect and is an active listener. We kneel down to the child’s level when speaking with him, look into his eyes when being spoken to, use the child’s name, and customize our vocabulary and topics to each child.

This set is one of the examples we have in the classroom. They show the metamorphosis of butterfly. We have a large number of other boxes, for example, vegetables, animals, fruits, vehicles…etc. We start from what is familiar to the child and then gradually things not familiar to him, and finally child’s vocabulary expands to the areas of biology, geography, geometry…etc.

As the child gains experiences, the objects are replaced by cards. These cards are classified by categories so that they help child to build mental order. The picture shows a set “Fruit-which has one stone”. The child learns the names of each fruits, and we talk about how and where they grow. Usually when I do cards with children, they start talking a lot about the fruits they have eaten at home and also ask many question to me. It seems these cards spark the child’s interest and stimulate their desire to talk.

(Writing)
After considerable spoken language practice, writing is offered to the child. Writing is a self-expression in written form. If a child has something to talk about, he has something about which to write. Many people are surprised to hear children start writing before reading, but actually writing is much more simple compared to reading. With reading, he has to recognize each letter and understand the sound attached to it, and get the meaning of the word. Also, reading means understanding somebody else’s thought.

For young children, writing has 2 aspects: self-expression and mechanics (how to control a pencil).

“Moveable Alphabet” is the first writing tool the child will use in the classroom. Before he is ready to use a pencil, he is capable of expressing his thoughts through the written word. To use this material, the followings are prerequisite skills.

-Sound Game; The child understand that words are made up of individual sounds. We pronounce a word very slowly and find out, for example, what sounds does “cat” have.- “c” “a” “t”.

-Sandpaper Letters; With this, we introduce the child to symbols of the sounds with which they have become familiar. (The symbols are identified by their phonetic sounds, not their names in the alphabet.)

Once child knows the 26 sounds of the sandpaper letters, the child possesses a large key to writing. At this time, the Moveable alphabet is introduced. This material is a substitute for a pencil, for a child who doesn’t yet have the skill to use one.

For child to be able to use a pencil, a lot of preparation is thought in previous areas(Practical Life Exercises and Sensorial materials). 3 finger pincer grip is trained by holding materials like knob, movement from left to right become natural for child as he lays out the materials (for example, dusting, table washing) in that way, flexibility of wrist is gained by tracing geometry cabinet…etc.
One of the reasons I like Montessori so much is this preparation which each material has for the next step.

(Reading)
As with writing, reading is not directly taught in the Montessori environment. After proper preparations, the child will spontaneously teach himself how to read. Child starts from phonetic reading, phonograms, puzzle words (the one child needs to remember), from one word to phrases and then finally reaches the stage of reading books.

Presentation for phonogram reading.

Reading booklet; Pink one for phonetic reading and the blue one for phonogram reading.

Definition booklet: The child reads about the flowers which he has already known. He gets experience with scientific terminology and finally he'll be able to put the strips of cards in order to make the definition about, for example, stamen, calyx...etc.

Montessori environment offers child the key for expressing himself with rich, logical and clear language. The child is given the means for exploring the ideas of others through out history and place. Reading opens such a big world for children and they can satisfy his curious , absorbent mind.

Practical Life Exercises

Recently I've been feeling like “living in the training center”!! A lot of us come early in the morning to practice and leave only around 7pm or some of my colleagues leave even at 10pm! I like this feeling of “festival” (or madness). Since people are so serious and nervous for exam, sometimes we have a big argument where to put the lid of the box, how to carry the bucket…which might sound bizarre for non-Montessori people. But, still, I enjoy thinking about materials, exchanging the information with friends who have been working in kindergarten what could be difficult for children in reality, how we can expand the activity, what can we do if we don’t have enough money to buy those materials…etc. Passing exam is one thing, but those discussion and learning from each other is something very special and precious, I feel.

For conclusion of my course and for my friends who have been asking me what kinds of materials we have in Montessori classroom, I decided to make short summery of each area.

In Montessori education, materials are grouped into 4 areas; Practical Life, Sensorial Materials, Language, Math.

Usually when children enter Montessori kindergarten around 2.5~3.0 yrs old, they start from practical life exercises as they build the basis of other areas.
Practical life exercises are divided into several groups: Preliminary Exercises, Care of Self, Care of Environment, Grace and Courtesy, Exercises for balance& Silence Game

Now let’s have a close look of each group.

(Preliminary exercises);

Examples of Activity; walking, carrying a chair/table/mat, opening and closing the door/small objects, spooning the seeds, pouring water…etc

Through these exercises, children become comfortable within classroom environment. Child learns how to communicate, move and carry things. Also, these exercises prepare him for more advanced activities in the next group. For example, pouring exercise is necessary for all activities with water. First child can concentrate on practicing only pouring water without spilling it, and then apply this skill in the next activity, for example “hand washing” which requires a complex of several skills. Montessori called this “isolation of difficulty”. Each material helps child to acquire one specific skill.
When we show child these exercises, it’s a good chance for us to show him the behavioral norms and guidelines. Child sees how we treat the things in environment with respect, how we walk carefully around the rug and eventually he starts following our manner in the extent he can.

(Care of Self)

Examples of Activity; Frames with button, snap, Eye and hooks, zipper, Buckle, Bow-tying, Shoe-lace, … Hand washing, Cleaning Shoes

Care of Self Exercises fosters child’s independence. Almost all children knows button when they come to kindergarten, but they don’t know how it works. These exercises clarify the mechanism of skills and help children master it. With acquiring the skills, child gets independent from adults, becomes self-confidence, and reaches the point to be able to help other members in classroom.

(Care of Environment)

Examples of Activity; Dusting, Sweeping, Washing, Silver Polishing, Flower Arranging.

These exercises differ from culture to culture. Child learns how to take care of his environment. Probably in Japan, I can make the exercise how to clean TATAMI mattress which we can’t wash in the western way of cleaning floor. Instead of silver, wood-polishing would be more common. For flower arranging, I can add IKEBANA lesson(Japanese traditional flower arranging). These exercises help children adapt to his culture, become a person of his time and place. Practical life exercises fulfill child’s “Sensitive Periods” of order, movement, senses, which have high peak around 3 years old and “Human Tendencies” of work, manipulation, repetition… Child has strong incentive for exercises as they match his developmental needs.

(Grace and Courtesy)

Examples of Activity; How to greet, excuse oneself, ask for help, say thank you/sorry, blow nose, set a table…

These exercises are given for prompting harmony in the classroom and helping young children orient and feel comfortable with social situations that might arise in the environment. Presentations are given at a natural moment, using role-play. (The tone of the role-play is happy& light, not accusatory.) Quite often, young child pushes other children because he doesn’t know how to ask to make a way for him, or he just cries when he needs help as he doesn’t know any other way to ask help.
As far as I observe children, they need some time till they can use grace& courtesy behavior. Even though they understand how to behave, they need to have enough self-confidence, responsibility, awareness of others and control of movement to act it out. Adults need to be patient!

(Exercises for balance)

Around 3-5 years old, the body’s proportion render the child top heavy, and the rapid growth changes the balance of the body constantly. So, we offer children the exercise “walking on line” so that they can perfect their balance and equilibrium, which in turn leads to physical and mental discipline. For older children, we give more challenge to balance. Child works with objects like in the picture. Actually children love this activity. Their love for challenges to balance can be seen in activities like walking on balance beam, walking on the pedestrian line on the street.

Practical life exercises aim at fostering independence, self-confidence, coordination of movement, adaptation of the culture, logical mind, concentration, patience…I can go on, but I’ll shut my mouth now :-)as it’s not the exam. The activities attract children a lot because they are suitable for their developmental needs, and the materials are familiar to them(They have already seen them at home), beautiful and color-coded, child-proportioned, real and orderly. This is my favorite area!

In the park...

I was taking care of my friend's daughter and while she was playing by herself, I reflected my day. Today, it was my first time to handle the class, 24 children by myself with an assistant. Some things worked well and some things went horrible, but in general I could say it was a nice day! This experience taught me a lot of things and made it clear that what I need to know before I start being in charge of the class in Japan from this September.

-To have good orientation of the classroom. To run the class smoothly, it’s really a basic thing. Today I was looking for the big paper for outline map of the world, tissue box, extra underwear for the child who wet her pants…etc. It took a lot of time!

-To know what to do in case of emergency. Nothing happened today, but I should have known where the list of parents’ telephone number, ambulance/police number in Munich.

-Be ready for the presentations. To know the materials and be able to show the right presentation to the children is one of the necessary tools, and that’s what I’ve learning in Montessori course this year.

-Be confident in the classroom rules. Especially in 3-6 class, children constantly ask why and sometimes challenge the teacher to see the reaction. As a substitute teacher, there were so many tiny things that I didn’t know what to react today simply because I don’t know the rules well.

-To have skills to link the children to the materials. Knowing the presentations and linking the children to the materials are two different things. If you were alone in the class with 24 children, you can’t sit next to one child for half an hour. To keep the eyes for whole class all the time as well as being ready for any kind of presentation, both of them are important.

-To know the children through observation. I found out that children have some behavioral pattern. Some boys in the kindergarten always say “No” for any kind of offer, but only for the first time. When I or other directress asks him for the second time after 10 minutes, he quite often says “Yes.”, and is ready for the presentation. This behavioral pattern applies to the lunch time, too. When one child asks him “Would you like some more?”, he says “No”, but when other child asks him again, he says “Yes”.
Observing the child’s interest and sensitive period, and offering him the material which suits to his developmental stage is one thing, but being aware of each child’s learning/behavioral pattern is also very useful, I feel. Of course, I need to be careful not to label children as well!

-To know and understand the assistant’s role and routine. It makes running the class much easier, and makes oneself feel secured. Today I didn’t need to worry to prepare lunch, do laundry, clean the room, re-confirm the duty of the week with parents..etc. It was a good secure feeling.

-To be ready to help the classroom community grow. To fulfill the needs and give aids for struggling issues of 25 children without exclusion of any of them requires one time, energy, experiences, knowledge, thorough observation of each child, patience, determination and dedication. It’s not the work which finishes in one day. It takes over 3 years when constant effort is required.

This year, I often thought to where I’m leading the child. This thought always ended up in the issue how the society is made up. One might say, “The strong beings win in the society and survive there.” If I perceive the society like this, it means I need to put my most efforts for supporting children getting the “advanced, superior” skills of mathematics, writing, reading to others. These skills would be very useful in the society like Japan where the competition of entrance examination is quite high. The “problem” children wouldn’t be cared neither by adults nor children in the group. Emphasis would be on improving individual’s skills and non-productive members would be ignored.

But, if I see the society as the place where everybody contribute his/her own talent and work, and live in harmony supporting each other, completely different approach to the children would be taken. Each child whatever issues he has is respected as a member of the classroom community, and necessary help for the child to go through the struggle is given by adults or children in the group.

This attitude of adults, the way how we see and think the society is, how we treat the each child surely affects the children’s way of thinking, treating others.
Maria Montessori said that each individual is like an organ in the body. Each needs to function well, and has to be in harmony with other organs to maintain the life. Human beings need each other, and everybody is the member of consisting of this world, each having his/her own “cosmic task”-the work which contribute to the evolution of this world-.

I feel it’s very important that each teacher in the class shares this big vision, which influences our daily single reaction/treatment to the children.

Peace Boat + Montessori

Have you ever heard about Peace boat? (Probably most Japanese people know it.)
"Peace Boat is a Japan-based international non-governmental and non-profit organization that works to promote peace, human rights, equal and sustainable development and respect for the environment. "
Their main activity is travelling all over the world with chartered ship where passengers join educational programs and various kinds of activities for positive social change in the world.

"Peace Boat`s 66th Global Voyage for Peace will pay its first visit to Scandinavia, including the first time ports of Stockholm and Helsinki. Sustainability will be the keyword of this voyage, with on board and in port programmes focusing on various related themes.Learning about northern European welfare and education systems will provide an opportunity to reconsider the true meaning of a “rich” society – going beyond economic wealth and efficiency, and instead focusing on the wellbeing of humans and the environment alike. Examples of natural conservation and environmentally-friendly economic policies around the world will be explored, as participants on this journey reconsider how to make our lifestyles and policies truly sustainable. "

ピースボート第66回目の航海のテーマは「Sustainability(持続性)」。

Can you guess what is going on the ship? They made the first Montessori kindergarten on ship! Children have Montessori environment during the journey and it makes it possible for the parents to travel with children! Here is the first report. My friend, Takako, has been leading the Montessori program and as soon as I hear from her again, I'll update more detailed information.

Sensorial Materials

These days, I’ve been busy practicing the presentations of Montessori materials. Every Sunday, before and after the course on Friday, Saturday, whenever I find the free time, my mind automatically starts thinking of the materials. It’s a typical symptom of “Montessori disease”, and it seems many of us in the course have got it. Now it’s 12 weeks before the oral exam( 8 weeks for written exam). I’m curious what kind of state I’ll be in right before the exams… Hopefully I can enjoy it.

Today, I’ll write a bit about “Sensorial materials” in Montessori Education. Montessori said that “the senses are the means of transferring information to the mind”. From the moment we were born, we start exploring this world with our senses. We have the senses of touching, smelling, tasting, hearing and seeing. The newborn soon becomes familiar with the touch of his mother, smell of the milk, his own blanket, and the voices of his parents. Quite often, I can see the cases that the crying baby becomes calm down in the moment he hears his mother’s voice. We, the adults, also need the senses to live in this world. What if we lost all the senses? –No hearing, seeing, smelling, touching, tasting-. Actually the senses are the keys to understand and perceive this world.

The children from 0-3 years old take in all the impressions, feelings into themselves without any discrimination and they builds up their psyche with them. (The details are written in the page “The Absorbent Mind”) During this period, they develop the basic senses of touching, hearing, seeing…etc.

The children from 3-6 years are aware of these impressions. They have the tendency to classify and sort these impressions. This tendency allows for the construction of the framework for “ further intelligence”. Intelligence is built up by sorting the experiences, impressions which they got. They need to refer to their own knowledge and experiences, and then they can step forward to try new things out. The children in this age are in the sensitive periods of refining the senses. Their sensitive periods guide them to get specific sensorial experiences, and a lot of information is sent to brain through senses. However, as the sensitive periods are transitory and disappears around 6, it is also said “The foundation for intelligence is set at six.” After this, the child develops intelligence through other measures.

In Montessori environment of 3-6 years old, we offer variety of “Sensorial materials” to help children refining the senses. I totally agree with what Montessori said; The more refined senses we have, the richer our experiences of the world will be. Offering the opportunity to refine the senses is a great gift we can give for the children. It can enrich his experiences in this world throughout his life.

Now, let's explore some of the sensorial materials! I’ll write about the basic principles of materials.

First of all, they present in isolation “one universal aspect of the physical world” like roughness, pitch, length. The material above is called “Red rods”, which shows the length. The shortest one is 10cm and the longest one is 1m. Not only the rods presents the length, it also prepares the child for decimal system. The number of rods is 10, and each increases the length regularly to 1m.

Second, it assists the child in making classification of sensorial impressions in the mind. The material above is “colour box”. First, we start presenting children the ones which have great contrast like red, yellow, blue. Then, gradually we progress the way and at the last stage, the child sees the differences between different shades of colours. Not to distract the children, each tablet looks the same except the colours, which are the ones we want to present to the child.

All the material leads children to the abstraction. To make abstraction, there are several steps. First child needs to manipulate the materials to understand the thing. For example, the spoon. It’s not enough to see the spoon. He needs to touch and use it. Then he becomes to be able to recognize other spoons in the environment. When he sees somebody using the spoon, he can think that that is a spoon. As the third step, he doesn’t need to see the concrete object, in this case the real spoon, to think about spoon. He gets the key for abstraction- language- and now he can handle the idea only in his mind.
The picture above is “Geometry cabinet”, which gives children the idea of different forms in this world. The child can trace the inset or frame, get familiar with the forms. Soon they start searching the same shapes in the environment and then, they reach to the abstraction. They are given the language for each form and they start handling the idea only in the mind.

Materials are mathematically correct. The red rod is based on decimal system, all the forms of geometry cabinet is mathematically perfect. A lot of materials also prepare children for mathematics and writing. (In Montessori, we have areas called “Language”, “Mathematics”, which are given after the sensorial materials. )

The material itself has control of error. The picture above is “Triangular box”, which we show the constructive power of triangles. When child makes mistakes, he notices them by themselves. The black line, and the colours are big help for them. Getting over the problem without being pointed out by the teacher gives self-confidence to the child.

At last, I have to tell that all of the materials are aesthetically pleasing. They are beautiful and very attractive to the children ( and to the adults!) It helps developing child’s aesthetic senses, too.
