Art Activity at home

Last week, when Jakob and I were both sick, Iris suggested us to have some fun with finger painting. I got as much excited as Jakob and enjoyed the feeling of paint with hands. First, we put on the special shirt for finger-painting so that we can dirt ourselves as much as we want to;-) Jakob has such a cool t-shirt painted by himself.

先週、ヤコブ君と一緒にフィンガーペインティングを楽しみました。フィンガーペイントの時は、ルールなし。どれだけ床も洋服も汚しても、時間制限も一切なし、とアイリス。ヤコブ君のお絵かきT－シャツ、素敵ですね。


After 10 minutes, I could see Jakob started to concentrate on painting so much, so I quietly stepped back and observed how he drew.
１０分後、おしゃべりをやめ黙々とペイントするヤコブ君を見て、静かに彼の様子を見守ることにしました。

Maria Montessori (the founder of Montessori education) believed that the child would only produce art when he had a need to. If he concentrates in creating art (or any other subject) he could repeat the same task over and over without getting tired. The child builds his character by concentrating on activities which he needs to. In the book "The Absorbent Mind", she said "The development of character (is) a natural sequence of events resulting from the child's own individual efforts, which have no reference to any extraneous factors, but depend on his own creative energy"

モンテッソーリ教育の創始者、マリア・モンテッソーリは、「子供の人格形成は集中して何かに取り組むことによってなされていく」と考えました。すべての生物がそうであるように、幼児期には自然からのたくさんの宿題をこなさなければなりません。動物の子供は、獲物の取り方を、人間の子供は二足歩行、手、指先の動きの洗練、言葉、、、。その種になっていくために、必要なものはそれぞれ違いますが、どの種も幼児期にすべてを獲得し、大人になっていきます。どうやって必要な能力を獲得するかといえば、みんな沢山練習をするのです。ある時期が来ると、脳の中でスイッチが入り、今獲得すべきものに子供たちが自然と取組み始めます。
小さい子供が、何度も何度も引出しを開けては閉めたり、赤ちゃんが繰り返し手を握ったり、開いたりするのもみんな手首、指先の使い方を練習しているのです。子供が集中するのは、今その子自身が自分の成長にとって必要な事をしているサイン。モンテッソーリ教育では、このようなアクティビティーを「お仕事」と呼んでいます。「自分を作るお仕事」を子供たちはしているんですね。

One of the most important things in art or any activity is to leave the child free to develop, because our or anybody's interfering can interrupt the inner drive for expression. Sometimes it is very hard not to comment on the child's work, try to find a title or explanation for it, but the work should exist for itself; 'art for art's sake'. When we liten to music by Mozart, we don't ask for a verbal description or explanation. Our attitude should be the same in child's art work.
Montessori also said that the adult should be like "servants" to the child.
"The teacher can find a very good model for her behaviour in the way a good valet looks after his master. He keeps his master's dressing table tidy, puts the brushes in place, but he does not tell his master when to use the brushes" (The Absorbent Mind)

子供たちが何かに集中し始めたら、大人のすべきことは一つ。安全性に問題のない限り、邪魔しないということです。たとえ、やっていることが本来の目的とは外れていても、子供が集中している限り、モンテッソーリスクールでは誰も（先生も他の子供達も）邪魔しません。
アートアクティビティーでは、子供たちが描いた絵に対して大人から「テーマはなにか」「何を表わしているのか」「誰にあげる絵なのか」とよく質問を受けますが、アートは子供たちが内からの欲求に動かされ、筆を動かすもの。モーツアルトの音楽に必ずしも解説が要らないように、子供たちの絵も絵自身（絵を作っていく過程）がすべて物語っている、と考えます。


Jakob finished his work after 90 minutes! He looked trully content and happy. How clever of him to add marks by scratching his paint with a stick, paint-container, and hands. These marks made the painting very interesting. Iris and I, two Montessori teachers, didn't interrupt him, of course!;-)

ヤコブ君は９０分後、絵を完成させました。３歳の子供が９０分も集中するのは大変なこと、かもしれませんが、やり遂げた！という満足そうな笑顔。アイリスも私も目を合わせてにっこり。子どもの集中する力は、人間として育っていく力。育ちゆく生命の力は、周りの大人にも大きな影響を与えています。人間、そして自然を取り巻くこの宇宙の法則とも呼べる神秘的な力を子供を通して見せてもらっている気がします。

The report about school progression

Last Sunday, after enjoying the huge waffle in the ceramic market, we dropped by our school/house for brain-storming. This is the picture of the yard now. The sand hill is surrounded by trees. Soon, our special gardener, Robert, will connect all of them and it should look nicer!

日曜日、陶器市の後、学校に立ち寄りました。学校の庭、前回ご紹介した写真とは随分違って見えるはずです。

Two long logs are fixed with cement.(Later, we'll hang the rope between them so that children can hang by hands and get into the tree houses!) Carrying all these logs, making the holes with earth-drill, fixing them with a thousand kilo of cement was surely a hard work! We were very glad that we had many strong guys willing to help this project;-)

この２本の木は、後に２つのツリーハウス（庭の両脇の木に設計中）をつなぐロープを吊るす為に運んできました。長さ６，７メートルの木を運ぶのも、アースドリルで穴を掘るのも、男性６人がかりの大仕事。今回ばかりは、アイリスも私も出番なしです。

Inside the classroom. The insulation of the wall/ceiling is finished now, so we can soon put the clay on it! I can't wait!

学校内部です。壁も天井も、電気配線・ヒーティングシステムが完備され、後は壁を珪藻土で塗っていきます。庭には６トンもの珪藻土が待機中。来週から忙しくなりそうです。

Our super-man, Peatre already made the wall for bathroom.
我らがスーパーマン、ピョートレがバスルームの壁を作ってくれました。


The water for the sink and toilets are ready, too. Now, we're looking for the child toilet and beautiful tiles for the bathroom.
トイレ、シンク共に水道をひきました。現在、子供用トイレと床に埋め込むタイルを探しています。タイルの色も素材も、アイディアがいっぱい！１つに絞るのが大変です。


Now, mainly Iris and I work in the front part of the garden. Next week, if the weather allows us, we're planting almost a hundred of plants for next spring. The green planner for the garden sent us 25 pages of word document which explains what we're planting!
I'd love to put the pictures of us working in the front garden here as well, but....Since we always work at night, it has been so hard to take pictures. We often find it funny that we shovel madly and sweat a lot at 9 pm under the moon light!;-);-)

現在、アイリスと私でがんばっているのが、庭の表側に砂山を作る仕事。来週、天気がよければ（寒くなりすぎなければ）１００株近く草花を春に向けて植える予定です。グリーンプランナーによれば、子供たちがいろいろな感覚を体験できるように、手触りの違う葉、様々な匂いの花、食べられる実、薬効のあるハーブ、鳥が集まる木…などババリア地方の在来種のみで数百種類もの草花を植える予定だとか。聞いているだけでワクワク！
ここに、私たちの働いている写真も載せたいのですが、最近は月明かりの下、夜働く事がほとんどだったため写真はまた次回に。夜、皆が寝静まるころ、黙々と汗だくになって（なるべく近所に音をもらさないように）庭を掘り起こしている私たち。まるで隠された宝を掘り起こす泥棒のよう！このシチュエーション、たまに正気になって考えると笑えます。

Sunday in Blutenburg Schloss (castle)

Last Sunday, there was a ceramic market in Blutenburg park. Iris, I and two dogs enjoyed sunny peaceful afternoon!
先週末は、ブルーテンブルク城の陶器市をのぞきに行きました。


We found a nice vase for children's flower arranging activity. In Montessori education, we give children a lot of activities called "practical life"-the work in the daily life. These are the works children love to do by themselves (They always like to do the same things which adults do)and through the activities, they learn language, refine the movement, get to know how to use the tools, see the sequence of things they do, build the self confidence...etc. For example, besids flower arranging, we have window washing, washing table, sweeping, dusting, watering plants, cooking...etc. For these activities, we carefully select the children's size tools which are safe and beautiful at the same time. We lead children for the success of the activities so that they can be self-confident and become a independent person.

子供サイズの花入れを見つけました！これなら校庭に生えている小さなお花を摘んで、ランチに子供たちがテーブルを飾ることができそうです。真ん中にキャンドルをともせば、クリスマスには素敵なデコレーションに。モンテッソーリの道を歩み始めてからは、どこに行っても、子供達のアクティビティーに使えそうなものは・・・とすぐに教材探しに夢中になってしまいます。


This vase reminds me of Japanese IKEBANA. In Ikebana, we use the board which has a lot of needles to make the flowers stand, but this vase has cover with holes! How clever! Now I even can decorate my collection of leaves with it.

モンテッソーリ教育には、たくさん「日常生活のお仕事」とよばれるアクティビティーがあります。（フラワーアレンジングもその内の１つです）小さな子供たちが一番したいことは、大好きな大人が普段お家でしていること。テーブルをふいたり、お皿を洗ったり、床を掃いたり、植物にお水をあげたり・・・大人が何気なくしている家事は、子供たちにとって様々な能力を伸ばす絶好のチャンス。お皿洗いを例にとっても、お皿を両手で持って運ぶのは、バランスを取りながら動く練習に。シンクに水をため、スポンジに石鹸をつけ、お皿を洗うのも、細かい指先の動き、段取り力が試されます。大人は当然のように水で石鹸を泡立て、お皿を洗いますが、小さな子達は先にお皿を洗って、後から石鹸をつけてみたり、スポンジを水にひたすのを忘れたり、と経験を重ねながら、物事を順序立てて考えられるようになっていきます。

子供たちが、「やった！できた！」という体験を重ね、自分に自信をつけていくお手伝いをするのがモンテッソーリ教師の仕事。アクティビティーで特に大切なのが、道具です。サイズの合わない道具を使うのは、大人でも子供でも大変です。教室には子どもたちが使いやすいサイズ、安全性、美しさの兼ね備わったものを用意します。


Such pretty shapes these numbers have! We spent a while to think if we should buy them or not for displaying the street number of our school, and finally we decided not to. We thought we can make them by ourselves;-) We are always so confident with ourselves.(sometimes too much, I guess)

学校の番地を表示するのに、こんなに素敵なナンバープレートを発見しました。アイリスとしばらく買うべきかどうかを話し合い、結局買わないことに・・・アイディアだけ盗んで、自分たちで作ろう！ということになりました。とかく何でもお店で買う習慣のある日本とは対極に、ドイツでは「まず自分たちでやってみよう！私たちならなんだってできるはず！」という精神が多く見受けられます。
（私とアイリスは、自信過剰すぎる!?とよくからかわれますが…）


Look at my lovely Ocarina! I always take it whenever I walk the dogs and practice it in the park. Poor Gonzo and Shina, they have to be very patient for my out-tuned songs. I'm pretty much encouraged by people passing by smiling, wishing me "good luck!". How sweet German people are!! I'm planning to surprise Jakob with German song played beautifully by Ocarina...and hope the day will come soooon!

オカリナの音色に惹かれ、つい手を出してしまいました。毎朝、ゴンツォ・シーナとの散歩途中、公園で練習しています。２匹は、音程外れた音色にうんざりとした反応。通りすがる人たちは優しく微笑んでくれたり、「がんばってるね～」と声をかけてくれたり。早く子供たちの前でドイツの歌を披露できる日が来ますように・・・！

The day of shoveling

The school garden project went one step further.
We had a big truck full of stones for our hills, which we made by shovel car last week, in the garden.
校庭プロジェクトがまた一歩進みました。
小石満載のトラックが到着！（先日ショベルカーで掘り起こした丘の上に敷く予定です。）


When the truck arrived, there wasn't enough space for all these stones, and...
Can you believe what the driver decided to do?
トラックが到着した時には、あいにく庭にスペースの空きがありませんでした。仕方がないので、、、


As you see on the pictures, he just dumped everything on the pavement/road!! Look at the grim of our architect who is responsible for the garden project.
すべて道路にぶちまけることに！庭のスペースを空けるため、必至で庭を占領している砂山を移動させ、推定４０㌧もの石を庭に人力で運び入れることになりました。校庭プロジェクトの責任者、ロバートさんの明らかな計画ミス。彼の満面の笑顔をご覧ください。

So, after this dump, everybody shoveled like a mad to clear up the road as it is illegal to block the pavement in Germany. Even the children helped a lot with their mini-wheelbarrow!( I'm so glad that I was sick in bed that day;-P)
この日は一日中、現場にいる全員でシャベルでザクザク。子供たちも、自分たちの手押し車で協力してくれました。

After a few hours, the machine could go out of the garden and help clearing up! Now we are so sure that all the neighbors are thinking what a madness we are in.
数時間後、砂山移動に成功し、機械を道路まで運び出すことができました。


On that day, I was sick lying in bed for a whole day. When Iris&Christian came back home, they looked as sick as I was(joking!), but completely exhausted. At night, Iris and I drank a hot lemon with German alternative herbal+alcoholic medicine, which has been passed from generation to generation, even from the period of monks.
この日は、（運良く!?）私は風邪で一日ダウンしていました。帰ってきたアイリスとクリスチャンのぐったりした様子に、びっくり。夜は、私が病院から処方された薬（ハーブ＋半分以上アルコール）を皆で飲み、明日は元気になろう！と誓い合いました。

It was very impressive that my German doctor gave me a lot of alternative medicine(herbal cream for inhalation, tea, homeopathic liquids, tablets, the bottle above in the picture), but no anti-biotic.(It won't usually happen in Japan.)All the natural medicine I got are just helping my body to recover by its own power. It takes longer time than in the case of using anti-biotic, but now I can feel that my body is gradually becoming fit again!

ドイツの病院は初体験でしたが、お医者様が気さくなことと、抗生物質は余程のことがない限り処方しない、と言われたことが印象的でした。その代り、吸引用のクリーム、ハーブティー、ホメオパシーのエッセンス、ハーブのタブレット、写真のアルコールドリンク等々両手で抱えるほどのお薬を頂きました。どれも自分の身体が、自分で回復していくのを手助けしてくれる自然のお薬。少し時間はかかりますが、徐々に身体が元気になっていくのを感じています。

Montessori Course (3-6) has started!

My Montessori course to get the international diploma of teaching 3-6 years old started last Friday in Munich!
(The institute has such a cute logo!)
I've been waiting for the day so long and I was very much excited to meet new Montessori colleagues and the trainer, Ms. Maria Roth.
Over 20 students gathered on the day, including 11 foreigners;
Switzerland,UK,USA,Canada,Peru, Argentine,Mexico,Russia,India,Sri Lanka, Japan.
Truly international course!
The course is held in Friday evening (4-9pm) and whole Saturday(10-6pm)from now on to the middle of August,2009. I got a bit nervous when I saw the long list showing the things I have to complete before next August, but I decided that I'll enjoy everything and surely the content will be attractive!

ついに先週の金曜日からミュンヘンにて３－６歳のモンテッソーリコースが始まりました。トレーナーのマリア先生、一緒に一年勉強するクラスメートとの顔合わせに、ドキドキ。クラスに集まったのは２０人余り。ドイツ国内はもとより、スイス、イギリス、ロシア、アメリカ、ペルー、アルゼンチン、メキシコ、インド、スリランカ、日本、と半分以上が外国籍という例年になく国際的なコース！となりました。
コースは金曜日（４－９時）、土曜日（10－6時）の週2日、来年8月半ばに試験を迎えます。この1年間の長い課題リストを見た時は気持ちが萎えそうになりましたが、一歩ずつ楽しみながら進んでいこうと心に誓いました。


For those who have been asking me "what is Montessori", I'll keep introducing you some of the knowledge and inspiration I get from lectures.So, today, here is one quote about Montessori method.

"The Montessori Method is a system of education born from the observation of the needs of the children at every stage of their physical and psychological development. Its objective is to help the child with the enormous task of inner construction necessary to pass from childhood to full adulthood." Dr. Mario M. Montessori, Jr., Education for Human Development

Montessori method was made by Italian doctor Maria Montessori(She is the lady in the picture above.) and this method promotes children to become an independent adults with clear view of the world and their role in it.
In education of the child, the adult has an important role. Montessori teacher, with absolute trust and respect for children's potential, and with scientific knowledge about children's physical, mental development, guides them to reach the optimal growth.
What I'll be learning this year is "the characteristics of the child from 3 to 6 years of age, the needs expressed during this stage of development, and the means we have available to assist the child's work of self-construction." In this course, 90 hours of observation in the kindergarten is required. We first need to be able to observe children, then find out what developmental stage they are in/ what their need is, and give appropriate assistance to them.


このブログでは、講義で得たモンテッソーリの知識を少しずつ皆さんと共有していきたいと思います。まず、今日はモンテッソーリ教育に関する引用です。

「モンテッソーリメソッドは、子供の精神的・身体的発達段階における必要性（必要な運動・活動・手助け）を観察することで生まれた教育体系である。このメソッドの目的は、子供達が幼児から大人に成長するのに必要となる、自分の内部を作り上げていく（自分を確立していく）過程を手助けしていくことである。」

モンテッソーリ教育はイタリアの女医、マリアモンテッソーリによって確立されました。この教育の目指すところは、子供たちが将来明確な世界観を持ち、この世界の中での自分の役割を認識した、自立した大人に育っていく過程を手助けすることです。子供達の持つ人間の可能性を信じ、また身体的・心理的発達に関する科学的な知識を持つモンテッソーリ教師の仕事は、子供たちに何かを教え込む、というよりは、子供たちが育っていく様子を見守り、導く、ということ。この1年間のカリキュラムには、90時間の観察課題が盛り込まれています。まずは子供のありのままをじっと見る、受け止める、ということが基本なのですね。その上で、子供たちの発達段階、今必要としているものを知り、教具や様々な活動へ導いていきます。

The day of digging!

The shovel car arrived to the school! We all got so excited and it was much bigger than we imagined. To get it inside the garden, we took a part of the fence off and broke some portion of concrete wall under the fence. I saw the neighbors passing by with their dogs all gazed at us, probably thinking what a crazy project we're starting;-)

学校にショベルカーが到着しました。校庭に入れるために、フェンスをはずし、コンクリート土台を打ち砕き、、、。散歩にいらしたご近所の方が、今度は一体何をはじめるのかしら、と不安そうにこちらを見ていました。


Look at Christian's face! He looked so happy driving it and seemed more excited than his son, Jakob. Yesterday, we kept digging whole day, from morning to night and it's amazing what we achieved!

クリスチャンの嬉しそうな顔。息子のヤコブ君以上に瞳を輝かしています。朝から晩まで掘り続けた結果を下の写真でご覧ください。


The half of the garden was dug out! It almost looks like the garden got attacked by bomb, but we're so sure that it will turn out to be a beautiful place. The architect of the garden (who made the wonderful plan for us) came and cheked if everything went well.

庭の半分を掘り起こし、小さな丘を作りました。写真でみると、まるで何かが爆発した後のようですが、素敵な校庭になること間違いなし。建築家のロバートさんが、アドバイスをしに来てくれました。


This whole project involves many specialists. I found it so nice to get to know all these nice creative people! Here is Peatre, our super-man from Poland, who can solve almost any problems. At this moment, he is busy listening Rock'n Roll. (No, the headphones are for protecting his hearing from the noise of the machine.)From the moment the shovel car arrived, he saved Iris and I who have no experience with the shovel car, but who still thought that we are able to manage handling it just by looking!

この学校作りプロジェクトにはたくさんのスペシャリストが関わっています。クリエイティブで誇りを持って仕事をしている方たちと繋がって、一緒に働くのも楽しみの１つ。上の写真は、ポーランド人のピョートル。どんな問題も解決できる我らのスーパーマンです。ショベルカーごとき、見よう見まねで動かせると思っていた私とアイリスを窮地から救ってくれました。彼のヘッドホンからは常にロックが、、という訳ではなく、機械の防音用だそうです。

まずは、ピョートルが持ってきてくれた子ども用ショベルカーで練習するヤコブ君。


It was an great opportunity for Jakob to see and handle the real shovel car! (though it was also very sweet of Peatre to bring him the child-shovel car;-)In Montessori education, giving the "real" object to the children is highly valued as children are building their world basig on their experience. I saw him working with his father, using all the real tools which I've never knew how to use, and often think how rich and big world this 3 year-old already has!

今回のショベルカープロジェクトはヤコブ君にとっても、本物のショベルカーを体験する絶好の機会。モンテッソーリ教育では、子供たちに「本物」を体験させることをとても大切にしています。なぜなら、小さな子供たちは自分の体験に基づいて世界を構築している過程にあるからです。いつもお父さんと一緒に、金槌、ハンマー、ドライバー、、、様々な機械（私がいじったことのないような機械もいっぱい！）を作って働いているヤコブ君。３歳にして、彼の世界はなんて大きく、豊かなんでしょう。


At last but not least, I have to mention that Gonzo&Shina also have been important member of this project. Their presence in the garden makes everybody relaxed. Here, Gonzo is sleeping in his favorite position. We all are enjoying so much of each stage of this school project!

ゴンツォとシーナです。ゴンツォはお気に入りの体勢でスヤスヤ。いつもみんなの気持ちを和ませてくれるこの２匹も大事なプロジェクトメンバーです。
