Christmas in Munich

This is my German Christmas report. Here is the Christmas market in Marien Platz. The building in the picture is Munich city hall, the landmark of the city.

In the Christmas market, you can buy sweets, Christmas decorations, fur prducts...etc. It seems typical that people drink hot wine in the market, so I followed others. It was tasy, but very strong! I nearly fainted during shopping.

At home, Jakob and Christian cut the Christmas tree. Jakob showed me how sharp the blade is and said "Keep your finger back, because it's dangerous if you touch it. Oh, I'll leave it a bit far away from you so that you won't get hurt."What a sweet 3 years old! I love his way of saying things.

We enjoyed decorating the tree. Iris told me that in German family, how to decorate the tree can be a big issue. People seem to discuss seriously in what color tree should be decorated mainly. In my German family, we decided to put all the decoration we have. Very simple and peaceful!

After attending a mass at the church, we exchanged the presents. Look how beautifully we decorated the tree! Everybody put the presents under the Christmas tree. Giant amount of presents!

Now the highlight of the day for everyone!

How fun it was to open the presents! I got a daily pad calender for German learners, warm wool cover for hot water bottle, baucher for facilities in Munich, huge match box with beautiful Munich painting, and a red toy bus which I've dreamed to have!!;-) This bus looks so cool with pretty flower paintings. One day, I'll show it to you.

My German Christmas at home was so "Gemutlich" (comfortable). Here, Jakob and Iris looking at Christmas figures. It was such a peaceful day! I wish everybody the nice Christmas holidays!

St. Nicolaus' visit

My Montessori course got St.Nicolaus' visit on 6th of Dec!

We got a bag of sweets &fruits, and good blessing! It was such a nice surprise from our trainer,Ms.Roth.

On that day, she talked about how important to expose children the culture which they belong to. St. Nicolaus day is a big cultural event in Germany. Her story went back to the lecture we had before; "the absorbent mind" and "adaptation", so I'd like to share some parts of her lecture with you.

One of the most important ideas of Montessori is " the absorbent mind". Maria Montessori talked about the child's brain working differently than an adult's one by absorbing the environment around him unconsciously without discrimination, and forming his psyche, the personality, at the same time.

One example of this is language. The child never studies the language in the way adults do, but wherever the child is born, no matter how difficult the language is, he starts to use it according to its rules, with all the exceptions. The language he absorbs becomes a part of his psyche and of himself. No adult can master the language as perfect as a child- some grammatical mistake or foreign accent shows that one is not speaking the mother tongue. Furthermore, if we don't use the new language for a while, we lose it easily.

In addition to language, children are able to absorb many aspects of the environment, including climate, food, local culture, how to move their body (e.g. how to walk-with big steps, fast, slow...), how to greet, think, and even the emotions and prejudices.
"I remember Gandhi once saying, "I could approve of and follow many customs of Western people, but I could never cancel from my soul the worship of the cow. As we see from this story, "the grown up who has grown up with the impression of the taboos cannot wipe them out even when they become a Doctor of Philosophy. The child really builds up something. He reproduces in himself, as by a form of psychic mimesis, the characteristics of the people in his environment. Thus while growing up, he does not merely become a man-he becomes a man of his race."
(Maria Montessori, Formation of Man, p.64)All the social and moral habits which are formed during infancy shape a child's personality making them typically Japanese, German, Indian, etc.

(Maria Montessori, Formation of Man)

With this absorbent mind, the child is able to adapt to his culture & environment. Regardless of the era or where he is born. So,child becomes the man of his race, his culture and his time.

Maria Montessori said "the child is the instrument through which everyone comes to love his own corner of the earth and becomes attached to his own customs but he is also, and for the same reason, the vehicle which transports mankind through the evolution of civilization."
In order to create an environment that allows the child to grow, we must create a safe, rich garden for development. It is necessary for adults to prepare an environment which is rich in many ways for the child including culture, language, courtesy, and attitudes of peace and compassion. If we keep making an effort to improve the environment for our child to grow peacefully, from generation to generation, humanity will surely reach a higher level and the world will become a better place.

(Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind)

Adults have a big responsibility for children, but especially parents' and teachers' role is big. We are the ones who prepare the home/school environment and at the same we are the part of the environment.
How nice to feel that each of us in this course thinks the role of teacher in the same direction, and just imagining us working with children all over the world surely lights my hope for the better future.

Montessori Mother-Child Group

Iris and I have been working together to hold the mother and child group every Wednesdays. One group has around 5 pairs of mother and child, and one session takes 1.5 hour.
The main task of our work is conveying Montessori ideas to mothers, helping the development of child's gross/fine motor skills, guiding him/her to become confident and independent person.
In one session, children get the chance to work with Montessori materials which are carefully selected by us, fully depending on the observation of children's movement skills, sensitive periods...etc.
The biggest difference between the Montessori kindergarten and our group is there are mothers together with children.

We always start the group with warming up activity. So far, for our 1.5 year old group, we've been using the ball pool where children can busy themselves with picking up balls, putting the balls into the bowl or tube.

While they play, Iris talks about topic of the day to mothers. This time, the topic was how important not to ask children question whose answer is already decided. For example, when we need to go home from the park, we tend to ask the question like "Do you want to go home now?", unconsciously expecting the child to say "Yes". If we can live up with any answer, there is no problem, but quite often, though children say "No", we start convincing the child "Well, it's getting dark. We have to go home now." or "Your dad is waiting for us. We have to go."
After several times of these conversation, children find out no matter what they say, there is no way their opinion is respected. They may become indifferent to the question from the mother, or stop thinking about things as the decision is always given by mother. It may sound such a trivial thing, but this attitude of adults influences the child's dignity, self-confidence in the future.

So, in one session, mothers learn and work a lot, too. They need to observe and analyze their own behaviour, way of talking to children. To be aware of oneself all the time demands a lot of energy. Usually we can see all the mothers get exhausted after the class. (Well, I also get exhausted after the class. Being a model for children is hard work, and day by day, I've been learning and improving myself.)

After the welcoming song, children tidy up the ball pool, bring the mats, carry materials from the stuff room and start working. Today we had 4 activities; puzzle, tree with rings(you can see in the picture), vertical bar with three balls, Christmas wreath decoration.
With these activities, they practice their fine motor skills (movements of fingers, hand, wrist). It may hard for you to believe, but children can concentrate on the activity for more than 20 minutes! The girl above is frantically putting the rings in.

All the adults are learning how not to interfere the children with their activity. Iris and I prepared the materials, putting the wire on all of the decorations so that children can simply stick them on the Styrofoam ring. We always try the material before giving to the children and make it sure that they can have an experience of success and feel "I can do it!"

Look what 1.5 year old made by himself!

After the activity, we had some movement to release physical energy. We set the slide, put the big ball to roll or ride, set the bar for walking on.

Then, we had snack time! You can see every children get their own chair, glass, knife, cutting board for banana in their size. Though they still need help from adult for cutting banana, they have been trying hard. Some may think it's too early and dangerous to let them use the knife, but it's not. They just need the clear limit and good model how we should handle the knife. I think the beginning is the most important. If we foster or let the behaviour go which we need to correct in the later stage, like eating while walking, playing up with knife, it's simply get harder to re-build the good customs as we wait. Imagine how hard it would be to teach 14 years old to sit and eat!

Children cleanig the table after eating.

I believe (also Montessori said)that 0-3 years old is the most important period for building the character, but we probably could say the parents who have a child of 0-3 are also in the most important phase to start building the good relation with the child, which enriches the life of both of them, gives joy of life and hope for the future.

Planting-part 2-

Last week, on one of the last days before we had snow here, we planted more than 2000!flower bulbs in the school garden. Our biologist, Thomas told me to plant the bulbs 15 cm away from each other, which I found impossible after 10 minutes. The garden is crammed with variety of flowers and with some of the bulbs I had difficulty telling which side facing upward. Sorry, Iris, if some are not coming up...

Here is Thomas' list of the flower bulbs. I have no idea what kind of flower are blooming in spring. Since Thomas doesn't speak English and my German level is as high as 1,5 year old, we had fun communicating each other. He had a clear picture of the whole garden and was quite specific which should go where and in what depth. It's amazing how much human can understand each other with body language.

On that day, I worked with Michi, Iris and Christian's good friend. Our last mission in the garden was transplanting this Japanese acorn tree. It may take only half an hour if the professinal does, but by the pair of the guitarlist in the rock band and small Japanese girl, it took a few hours.

Yes! We saved the tree. He now found the new place to live, just beside the sand hill with water pump.

Today, Munich got the first snow and it seems the heavy winter is starting. It was a perfect timing that we finished planting last week.
I wish all the plants are not frozen under the ground...I told them that we meet again in spring, so I believe the day will come!

Addition 1. Michi has such a cool car! He re-modeled everything by himself. I want to share this picture with you;-)Isn't it super-cool?

Addition 2; Just now Iris got the official paper saying we planted 2970 bulbs! Wow, nearly 3000!!!

Sunday at home

It is getting very cold in Munich. When I opened the window this morning, Christian told me that he smells snow is coming soon! It seems the suburbs of Munic has already got the first snow. I wonder when it arrives here. Can't wait;-)

Today, Jakob, Ronija and I had a muffin baking experiment. As Iris was sick in bed, the children decided to do something nice for her;-)

We (mainly Ronija) figured out all the ingredients!

Jakob mixing the flower, sugar, milk together. I was amazed to see 3 years old using the electronic mixer perfectly. He started it with the first gear till the dough gets hard so that the flower won't be scattered around and once the dough got harder, he changed the gear to the highest one. I'm not sure if I could do that when I was three. Hmm, maybe not.

When the dough got ready, they put it into the mold.

Again I realized that cooking involves so many different activities. They moved their body a lot to collect the ingredients from the fridge, cooking tools from several drawers. They needed to use mathmatical mind to measure and count ingredients, which also includes the fine-motor skills like spooning the flower into the bowl, cutting the butter with knife. Children communicated a lot what to do, with which both of them increase the vocabulary, and for Ronija, there were many chances of reading exercises. During cooking, they got a lot of sensorial experiences like touching eggs, flower and feeling the dough, smelling and tasting the muffins.

This is the end result of our muffin baking. Aren't they nice!? I'm very proud of them doing almost everything by themselves, and they looked very happy to see the muffins.

After we enjoyed the muffin and coffe with Iris&Christian, we all went to Frauen church, the biggest church in Munich for the concert of "Requiem" by Morzart. It was absolutely a gorgeous experience. We had orchestra with chorus of 150 peple and I liked the atmosphere of the church in the evening. It was such a nice Sunday!

St. Martin's Day

Today, 11th of November is St. Martin's day.

Here is a legend of St. Martin that I heard in the kindergarten.
St. Martin was the bishop of Tours and lived in the 4th century. Originally he was a soldier in the Roman army, but he became famous because of his kindness.
When he met the shivering begger on the street, he cut his cloak into half and gave it to the begger to save him from dying of coldness. As he helped so many poor people, he was chosen to become the next bishop of Tours, but he really hesitated to be a bishop and hid himself in the goose house. The cackling geese, however, gave away his hiding spot and finally he agreed to become a bishop.
Because of this story, it's a day of eating goose in Germany.

Now, especially at the kindergaten, children listen to or read the story of St. Martin, do a small play, make a parade at night with lantern, stopping by houses singing and getting some treat. Today, I also joined the gathering of Jakob's kindergarten.

St.Martin's song sounds very cute and funny. Rabimmel, rabammel, rabum.” (I’m walking with my lantern, and my lantern comes with me. Up there the stars are shining, and we’re shining down here. My light is out, I’m going home. Rabimmel, rabammel, rabum.) I as well as small children love the last three words;-) as these are the only words I could join!

"I noticed that sharing is caring!"
This is the word from a girl at Rainbow(Montessori kindergarten where I work as a substitute), after reading a story of St. Martin. Today, I could see many children sharing their sweets, books;-)

Sensitive Periods

My Montessori course has been very interesting! and I'm very happy to meet my international friends at school every time. We study a lot, but we also talk, laugh, exchange foods& sweets from country during the breaks...the time in the school is very busy, full of things to do;-)

Last week, we had a lecture "sensitive periods", which is one of the corner stones of Montessori thoughts, so I'd like to introduce it to my friends who haven't heard anything about it. (Dear my Montessori friends, you can skip this article.)

The term "sensitive period" was first used by a Dutch biologist, Hugo de Vries, who studied the developmental phases of butterfly. He discovered that the baby caterpillars who can only eat the young, tender leaves at the very tip of the branches have special sensitivity for light. During the period they only can eat these leaves, they have irresistable impulse to move toward light. So, as a result, they can find the right foods for them. When they grow enough to eat harder leaves, this impulse, the sensitivity for light, disappears.

Maria Montessori observed children and found out that children also have the sensitive periods, which are universal (observable in the children all over the world). She said that "At particular epochs of their life, they reveal an intense and extraordinary interest in certain objects and exercises, which one might look for in vain at a later age. During such period the child is endowed with a special sensibility which urges him to focus his attention on certain aspects of his environment to the exclusion of others. Such attention is not the result of mere curiosity; it is more like a burning passion"

Here is the chart for major sensitive periods for children in 0-6 years old;language, movement, small objects, order, developmet of senses, social development.

The idea "Sensitive Period" explains the facts of a child concentrating on watching the ants moving on the ground for hours(He is in sensitive period for small objects), showing anger when somebody sits in the different place at the dinner table( sensitive period for order), emptying the tissue box by pulling tissues out( sensitive period for movement-hand-)...etc.

This chart shows an approximate age when child has sensitive periods. As we can see from the chart, it's transitory. When the time comes, this special sensitivity will be gone like in the baby caterpillar's case, and never come back.
These sensitivities are great gift from nature! The child will learn things much easily and even with happiness and joy in this period. It's like the example of biking with wind from back. (Learning goes so easily and a lot of fun) However, once we miss the period and try to learn things out of this period, it's like biking with counter wind.(Learning goes harder and a lot of efforts & pains)
In Montessori class, teachers observe child and see in which sensitive period he is and guide him to the right materials. "To follow the child" is a key phrase in Montessori education.

The day of planting

I'm so happy to tell you that we finally reached the planting stage!! We worked so hard for the preparation; making hills (a lot of shoveling!), putting the compost all over the garden (a lot of shoveling!& wheel-barrowing) and sorting the plants according to the place they should be (a lot of patience and energy to read hundreds of Latin names and finding out the right one from the pile at midnight).

First, our biologist, Thomas, placed all the plants in the garden. Gonzo is checking the plants, sniffing and tasting;-)

Then, we planted and planted for a whole day, almost for 9 hours! More than 300 plants were planted. Here is Thomas planting with super-high speed. He worked all these hours without a single break.

Children also enjoyed helping us. Thomas taught them how to plant and they asked some questions to him like what the compost is and why the plants need it. How nice for them to have a social contact except the parents and teachers at school. They can learn other specialities which parents don't have and practice having conversation with other adults.

Look at what out architect, Robert made! Can you see the snake and crocodile?

It's amazing how easily Robert handles the chain-sew! It looked like he was cutting the cake, not the wood.

We all, adults and children worked in very Montessori way. We each had certain jobs to finish and a lot of (loong) concentration were seen in the garden. Considering the amount of the work, the garden doesn't look so much changed, though surely it looks better. We're using a lot of imagination for the future figure and hope we all will smile like this guy in next spring!

The study of leaves

Autumn has been deepening in Munich, or I can say that the early winter is starting here. Last weekend, the weather was exceptionally very nice, so it seems everybody was out, enjoying the last piece of sunny autumn before the hard winter.

Iris, Jakob, Ronija and I had an excursion to the botanical garden. We frantically collected the leaves on the street and made the huge collection of colors, shapes of them. On the picture, Iris is explaining the leaf Jakob got. Ronija proudly told us that she can classify the leaves depending on the shapes. We almost spent an hour on the street, but it was such a nice opportunity for children to find out the subtle color differences, to know the various shapes and the structure of leaves.

When we put up the leaf into the sky, it's amazing how beautifully we can see the structure of the leaf! This is one of the leaves Jakob gave to me and my favorite one.

In the botanical garden, there was an exhibition of "chocolate" on that day, showing the cacao trees and some statistics & explanations, but our or my attention was mostly paid to the leaves! Look at all the amazing leaves I found.
In the picture above, it seems somebody dropped the paint on the leaves, but no. They are changing the color from green to pink!

They look like a painting and what amazed me is the color of the back side of the leaf. It's purple! How beautiful combination it is!

Actually they are not leaves. What seems like leaves are stems of cactus, and their leaves are the spikes on them. The stems are forming the "flower" on the ground!
In nature, everything has a reason. All the shapes, colors of leaves have reasons to be as they are, too. I can't know how and why they become like as they are now, but surely I can say that the nature has a law of beauty.

Art Activity at home

Last week, when Jakob and I were both sick, Iris suggested us to have some fun with finger painting. I got as much excited as Jakob and enjoyed the feeling of paint with hands. First, we put on the special shirt for finger-painting so that we can dirt ourselves as much as we want to;-) Jakob has such a cool t-shirt painted by himself.

After 10 minutes, I could see Jakob started to concentrate on painting so much, so I quietly stepped back and observed how he drew.

Maria Montessori (the founder of Montessori education) believed that the child would only produce art when he had a need to. If he concentrates in creating art (or any other subject) he could repeat the same task over and over without getting tired. The child builds his character by concentrating on activities which he needs to. In the book "The Absorbent Mind", she said "The development of character (is) a natural sequence of events resulting from the child's own individual efforts, which have no reference to any extraneous factors, but depend on his own creative energy"

One of the most important things in art or any activity is to leave the child free to develop, because our or anybody's interfering can interrupt the inner drive for expression. Sometimes it is very hard not to comment on the child's work, try to find a title or explanation for it, but the work should exist for itself; 'art for art's sake'. When we liten to music by Mozart, we don't ask for a verbal description or explanation. Our attitude should be the same in child's art work.
Montessori also said that the adult should be like "servants" to the child.
"The teacher can find a very good model for her behaviour in the way a good valet looks after his master. He keeps his master's dressing table tidy, puts the brushes in place, but he does not tell his master when to use the brushes" (The Absorbent Mind)

Jakob finished his work after 90 minutes! He looked trully content and happy. How clever of him to add marks by scratching his paint with a stick, paint-container, and hands. These marks made the painting very interesting. Iris and I, two Montessori teachers, didn't interrupt him, of course!;-)

The report about school progression

Last Sunday, after enjoying the huge waffle in the ceramic market, we dropped by our school/house for brain-storming. This is the picture of the yard now. The sand hill is surrounded by trees. Soon, our special gardener, Robert, will connect all of them and it should look nicer!

Two long logs are fixed with cement.(Later, we'll hang the rope between them so that children can hang by hands and get into the tree houses!) Carrying all these logs, making the holes with earth-drill, fixing them with a thousand kilo of cement was surely a hard work! We were very glad that we had many strong guys willing to help this project;-)

Inside the classroom. The insulation of the wall/ceiling is finished now, so we can soon put the clay on it! I can't wait!

Our super-man, Peatre already made the wall for bathroom.

The water for the sink and toilets are ready, too. Now, we're looking for the child toilet and beautiful tiles for the bathroom.

Now, mainly Iris and I work in the front part of the garden. Next week, if the weather allows us, we're planting almost a hundred of plants for next spring. The green planner for the garden sent us 25 pages of word document which explains what we're planting!
I'd love to put the pictures of us working in the front garden here as well, but....Since we always work at night, it has been so hard to take pictures. We often find it funny that we shovel madly and sweat a lot at 9 pm under the moon light!;-);-)
