4 Stages of Development

Thinking of my age led me to write about "4 planes of development". I'll warn you first. This article is very very long! If you get ready, let's go exploring the world of 4 planes of develpment!;-)
Maria Montessori divided the phase of human development from 0-24 years into 4 stages, each lasting 6 years.

From stage to stage, a child changes dinamically leading Montessori to use the example of a butterfly's metamorphosis to describe the changes that occur in a child.
"The various stages of larva, chrysalis, and adult butterfly are so radically different as to be unrecognizable one from the other. So, too, are the extraordinary differences of each plane of human formation that the young person appears in each as a re-created being. Each of these 4 planes of development builds on the last so that faulty development in any one affects the successful completion of all the others." ("Montessori Today" P.6)

Her view of child development is quite different from the traditional one. Traditionally, people thought human intelligence increases with age, so from the elementary school the education follows a steady ascent becoming more difficult each year with more subjects added, more teachers introduced, more study and skills required. The graph below shows the trend seen with traditional education.

On the other hand, the graph reflecting Montessori education can be seen below. In each stage, there's an emergence, rebirth of development that reaches a peak and declines. She also states how important it is to prepare the environment in order to support the acquisition of knowledge at each stage of development.

Now, let's have a look at the characteristics of each stage of development.

●1st Stage (0-6 years old)

-This is a stage of self-development. Children are becoming strong individual capable of independent action(e.g. walking, dressing), learning language, acquiring self-discipline and basic academic skills of writing, reading, math, etc.
- This stage is a particularly sensitive period of development. In this stage, they are extremely receptive to certain areas of development such as order, language, and learning to walk.
-The absorbent mind is working. They have the capacity for taking in the elements of the environment just by existing within it.

●2nd Stage (6-12 years old)

- Children become interested in their peers, not from the self-centered view point of younger children, but from a genuine curiosity and desire to understand the thoughts and actions of others.
- Elementary schoolers mind is now beginning to reason and they are capable of distinguishing the real from unreal based on their powers of reason and imaginaton.
- Montessori said they have "psychological characteristics" which include an intense absorption with issues of good and evil, justice and unjustice, loyalty and disloyalty, and the rules and rituals of the group.
-This stage could be described as the intellectual period of development. The child has extraordinary energy and is physically healthier than in the earlier period. With his immense curiosity about all of life and his newly formed powers of reason, the child is in his most intense period of learning.

●3rd stage (12-18 years old)

-During the first 3 years of this stage, there appears to be great strength and capacity for reasoning and psychological abstractions, however, there is also a sense of vulnerability and fragility, similar to that found in a child in the first 3 years of life. During this time, 12-15 years old are very self-centered once again. As with 0-3 years olds, teenagers are undergoing intense physical growth and changes in mental capacities. As a result, young adolescents have a great desire for close, one-to-one adult attention, just as in the first 3 years of life. The difference this time is that the adult can be somebody outside the family.
-At the same time, they need the comfort and companionship of supportive peer groups.
-Due to the similarities between the 1st and 3rd stage of development, Montessori called this teen stage the "second birth".

●4th stage (18-24 years old)

-The final pstage mirrors the stability and intellectual expansion of the second stage, which was described as the intellectual period of child development.
-At its conclusion, the adult is fully formed and if all has gone well, he is a mature being, ready to live wisely, responsively and ready to fulfill his part in serving humanity.

Montessori believed that "each child has a part to play in the continuing story of the human understanding and transformation of the universe. She called this individual responsibility the child's "cosmic task." At the 4th stage of development, each person finds their own cosmic task, and starts committing to the universe through their work. It's one of the biggest goals of Montessri education.

In Montessori elementary school, the accomplishments of human beings throughout the ages and gratitude to them for their contribution are introduced. In the second stage of development, children come to appreciate that the quality of their present lives are directly dependent on the gifts of past generations, and that they are also playing a part in the continuous human civilization. The seeds of respect for human progress is sown in the second stage and keeps growing. Each child blooms each different but beautiful flower, which leads to the transformation of the universe in their life.

For this to happen, a solid foundation must be established from the very first stage of development, otherwise the future growth and development of the child will not be supported if the foundation is incomplete and fragile. The Montessori educator especially for 0-6 years olds are there to support and guide the children to reach thier full development.

This fact makes me feel joy for my work and at the same time, deep responsivility as well.

Human tendencies

On Jan.6th, we had a holiday called "The three kings' day" in Bavaria. This is a Christian holiday that celebrates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed a bright star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child.
Together with Iris and Jakob, I attended the mass at the church. After that, we agreed that the religion is a human tendency and whatever belief people have, it's natural for human being to gather with people sharing the same belief.

There are several special terminology that Iris and I share from Montessori training. Human tendency is one of them. This term means that all humans have certain tendencies or behavior patterns regardless of the country, culture, ethnicity or era that they live. It's a universal principle of human behavior as a species without the intervention of the will.
The pulling force of the certain behavior can be described like the gravitationed pull of a book falling to the ground. Like the Absorbent Mind and the Sensitive Periods, Human Tendency is an instinct that children bring with them to the world.

Some of the Human Tendencies Montessori talked about include exploration, orientation, order, manipulation, repetition, control of error leading to perfection, precision, and communication.

Exploration
Imagine the first humans on earth and think about the behaviors which allowed them to survive without the survival instincts of animals.
First of all, they would have explored their environment to find food, water and make shelter, all primary needs of humans for survival.

As they explored farther from their point of origin, they had to orientate themselves to get back to their starting point. They needed to hold the information in their mind, and make order out of it.

Imagination
To meet the needs of survival, they must have had tendencies beyond exploration, orientation and order. They must have had the ability to imagine and to create abstractions. Without these abilities, how otherwise could they observe the horns of an animal and imagine sharp instruments for hunting and defense, bserve a bird's nest and imagine the construction of a shelter, notice the animal's fur and realize that it could be used to keep them warm?

Manipulation, Repetition, Control of Error, Perfection, Precision
Having only imagination isn't sufficient for survival. They had to have the means to bring their imagination into the concrete world. Hands were critical to provide the means.
Primitive man might have made a chair with two legs, which wouldn't be able to stand. Unable to stand, they made changes using their imagination and intelligence.
We see a circular procedure of mind and hand here.By manipulating with their hands, they tried out what the mind had created and the result went back to the mind.
This feedback circle from thinking to repeated manipulation and control of error leads to other tendencies, precision and perfection.
Through these behavioral tendencies, human beings create the environment which we have now.

Communication
The final tendency I will describe here is communication which is as important as those already mentioned to maintain the quality and continued progression of human life. Through communication, human beings have cooperated with each other to solve common problems. Furthermore, communication based on written language, has allowed each generation to pass on its accumulated wisdom to the next.

Human Tendencies don’t change. We can presume that we have the same tendencies as humans who lived hundreds years ago did. However, the ways of using the tendencies are different. For example, hundreds of years ago communication was carried out mainly by humans orally relaying their message to the others. With time, systems of communication progressed from letter delivery to telephone to current use of mobile and internet.

Montessori talked a lot about how we can help children make the best use of the powers that they have. In the next section, I'll describe how a Montessori classroom is prepared for supporting children.
