Today, 11th of November is St. Martin's day.
11月11日は聖マーティン祭。ドイツでは、クリスマス、イースターに次ぐ大きなお祭りの一つです。
Here is a legend of St. Martin that I heard in the kindergarten.
St. Martin was the bishop of Tours and lived in the 4th century. Originally he was a soldier in the Roman army, but he became famous because of his kindness.
When he met the shivering begger on the street, he cut his cloak into half and gave it to the begger to save him from dying of coldness. As he helped so many poor people, he was chosen to become the next bishop of Tours, but he really hesitated to be a bishop and hid himself in the goose house. The cackling geese, however, gave away his hiding spot and finally he agreed to become a bishop.
Because of this story, it's a day of eating goose in Germany.
今日は幼稚園で子供たちと一緒にセイント・マーティンについてのお話を聞きました。 聖マーティンは、4世紀の司祭様。しかし、もともとはローマ軍の一兵士だったそうです。とても親切な心の持ち主で、街で寒さに凍えている物乞いに、自分のマントを半分に切ってまでして与えた、という伝説が残っています。（上の写真がそのシーンです）たくさんの貧しい人を救った、ということでマーティンは司祭の地位へと推薦されます。しかし、有名になることを望まなかったマーティンは、司祭へ任命される日、ガチョウ小屋に身を隠し、司祭の職を逃れようとしましたが、ガチョウが騒ぎ立てたため、居場所が発覚し、結局司祭様へとなりました。
このお話のためか、ドイツでは聖マーティン祭にはガチョウを食べるのが習わしとなっているようです。
Now, especially at the kindergaten, children listen to or read the story of St. Martin, do a small play, make a parade at night with lantern, stopping by houses singing and getting some treat. Today, I also joined the gathering of Jakob's kindergarten.
聖マーティン祭は、子供にとって一大イベント。幼稚園では、聖マーティンについてのお話を読んだり、お芝居をしたり、夜は子供たちが手作りのランタンを持って街を練り歩きます。私も夕方、ヤコブ君の幼稚園の集まりに参加しました。

St.Martin's song sounds very cute and funny. “Ich geh’ mit meiner Laterne, und meine Laterne mit mir. Dort oben leuchten die Sterne, und unten leuchten wir. Mein Licht ist aus, ich geh’ nach Haus. Rabimmel, rabammel, rabum.” (I’m walking with my lantern, and my lantern comes with me. Up there the stars are shining, and we’re shining down here. My light is out, I’m going home. Rabimmel, rabammel, rabum.) I as well as small children love the last three words;-) as these are the only words I could join!
聖マーティン祭の歌は、とてもかわいらしく、愉快です。「ランタンと一緒に歩いているよ。ランタンがくっついてくる。空では星が、ここでは僕らが輝いてるよ。火が消えたら、お家に帰ろう。ラビメル、ラバメル、ラブム」最後の3語は呪文で、特に意味はないのですが、まだ歌詞の覚えられない小さな子供たちに（私にも）大好評。

This is the word from a girl at Rainbow(Montessori kindergarten where I work as a substitute), after reading a story of St. Martin. Today, I could see many children sharing their sweets, books;-)
「分かった！分け合う（シェアリング）ってお互いに想い合う（ケアリング）ってことなんだね」
-レティシアちゃん、聖マーティンのお話を読んで。この日は幼稚園で、古着、使わなくなったおもちゃの交換、食べ物の差し入れ、幼稚園への寄付など、子供も大人も自分のできる範囲で、たくさん分かち合いをしていました。
