Open House

Yesterday I had a gathering of parents and children in the farm. Surprisingly more than 20 people who are interested in this farm and Montessori came for the open house!

昨日、モンテッソーリ説明会とタケノコ堀を主催した所、沢山の親子・家族が（20人以上！？）農場に遊びに来てくれました。


I've been renovating the kitchen and living room in the guest house so that I can use them for my Montessori class. Just one day before having this open house, I finished the painting work thanks to Kyoka and Gen's help.

ゲストハウスのペンキ塗りが終わったのが、一昨日。大慌てでの準備となりましたが、なんとか間に合いました。


For this open house, I put several Montessori materials from each area to explain how these materials help children learning.
It was interesting to get questions like how it is possible to connect children with wiping the table activity as her son never wants to wipe the water when he drops his glass...etc.

モンテッソーリの生活、感覚、言語、数の分野からいくつかの教具を展示しました。教具を触ったり、いくつか質問も飛びたしたり、とあっという間に時間が過ぎていきました。モンテッソーリの教材は、見るだけでも楽しいのですが、使って自分で何かに気付いた時の楽しさといったら！！
今度は、もっとゆっくりと教材に触れる会も催してみたいです。


Time passed so quickly so we almost couldn't reach math area. One of the mothers who teaches at the elementary school commented that how important for children to have sensorial experiences of numbers. She found it extremely difficult for some children to show the differences of digits without using these concrete materials.

結局時間がいっぱいで（子供たちも室内にいるのに飽きてきてしまって）、数の分野まではたどり着きませんでしたが、すべての教材が何かの伏線となっているモンテッソーリの教材の魅力は、この最後の分野である数に詰まっている気がします。3歳から手に取っていた教材で少しずつ準備されてきたことが、全部数の教材で活きてくるのです。子供たちは、当然、このことに気づく術もないのですが、周りにいた大人はこの緻密な教具の構成のされ方に魅了されてしまうのです。


I'm happy to have my piano back here. Delicious cake was baked by one of the generous mothers and all of us enjoyed it.

この日は美味しいケーキの差し入れをごちそうになり、その後、子供も大人もタケノコ堀に向かいました。



I just want to show you the colors of the ceiling. I chose black and light gray so that the atmosphere of the room matches to this fancy light which I found not removable.

最後に、このリビングルームの天井をご覧下さい。天井の面がゴツゴツしているため、塗るのにとても時間がかかりましたが、グレーとブラックに落ち着きました。取り外し不可能なこのランプも、素敵に見える色だと思います。


After this open house, all the children and parents enjoyed looking for bamboo shoots. I feel the combination of farm environment and Montessori has great potential. I still do wish to have a classroom where the tomato stand is now, just in the middle of the farm, instead of the guest house where we need to walk out of the farm, but these two rooms are good enough for the moment.

From May, we'll start a regular mother/father and child class on Saturday. The way I hold the class is far from the "ideal" Montessori class (3 hours of working in the morning, 5 days a week...etc) which we learned in the course, but this is what I can offer right now under the strict regulation of government and under the situation of me being a farmer. I'll see how my Montessori classroom grows in the future:-)
At the moment, I'm just being so happy that all my work for last 6 months were somehow put together and showed its figure!

タケノコ堀は、みんな本当に楽しそうでした。「やった～、掘れた～！」と叫んでいる子もいれば、黙々と皮むきに夢中になる子もいたり、子供以上に熱中して掘っているお父さん、お母さん達の姿も見られました。

まずは、教室の環境作りが一息ついたこと、また来月から少しずつモンテッソーリのクラスを始められることが、とても嬉しいです！
