Montessori class in June

Last Saturday, we had a Montessori class in the farm. This time, I changed several things. I switched morning and afternoon programs, so mothers and children came to the farm, harvested the vegetables for lunch and quickly moved to Montessori house. Due to this change, we gathered at the farm half an hour earlier, at 9:30 so that children could have 2 hours of Montessori program before lunch. This change worked very well. Children didn't get too tired before Montessori activities and actually in the afternoon, they could run and move till the end of their energy without worrying getting muddy.

先週の土曜日は6月のモンテッソーリクラス。今回は前回の経験から、いくつか変更したことがあります。まずは、午前と午後のプログラムの入れ替え。朝畑に出ると大人でもぐったりとしてしまうこのごろ。午前中にモンテッソーリ活動、午後に畑のアクティビティーとしました。いつもより30分早い９時半に農場に集まり、ランチに使う野菜を収穫した後、教室へ移動しました。

今回、クラスの始まる前、私の頭には一抹の不安もありました。子供たちが教室に来たのは１か月前のこと。一体どのぐらいのことを覚えているんだろう？教材も積み重ねの上に成り立っていくものが多く、月に１回で成り立つのかな？…ドイツでもモンテッソーリ親子グループをいくつか見学しましたが、毎週のクラスが多く、月１回はまだ聞いたことがありません。教室では、子供たち自身が興味を持ったものに取り組みますが、それは教室内の秩序が保たれているからできることでもあります。例えば、毎回８人の子供が、教材を投げたり、走り回ったり、大人がそれをとめるのに一生懸命！なんて事になれば、いくらモンテッソーリの教材があっても、子供・大人共にストレスがたまる時間以外になりえません。


Before the class, I was a bit nervous how children behave in the classroom. Last month I showed them how we tidy up materials, how we wait a turn in the classroom...etc. They seemed very excited last month and I needed a lot of help from mothers to make them tidy up things.

One month has passed since the last class. I wondered how much they remember the rules. However, my worry was swept away at the moment children came into the classroom. A boy said "I'll try this" pointing at red rods and went off for bringing a mat for him. A girl was looking at him carrying red rods and suddenly said "Oh, you shouldn't carry them together. One at a time!". You can't imagine how much I was amazed by them!! This girl smiled and said to me "I'll go for watering the plant."

子供たちが教室に入るのは、ドキドキの瞬間でしたが、すぐに心配が吹き飛びました。「これやる～」と赤棒を指さす男の子。さっそく自分のマットを持ってきてひいています。それを見ていた女の子、「そうじゃなくてこうやって持つんだよ。」と先生顔負けの指導までしています。クラスが始まってしばらくの間、子供たちの様子に本当に驚いてしまい、改めて子供たちが前回のクラスでどれだけのことを吸収していたのかを実感させられました。

前回提示した教材は自分たちで自由に選んでやっています。ふとクラスを見渡すと、子供たちは葉っぱの掃除をしていたり、パズルをしていたり、「私、何しよう」と自分が手持ちぶさたになってしまう時間もあるぐらいでした。


2 hours in the morning passed very calmly. One big change during the activities was parents stayed in the study room and took turns to come and observe the class. I think too many adults in a class gives children the feeling that they are seen all the time. This time, there were only me and a friend of mine who offered her help in kitchen. She was busy preparing lunch for all and I tried to sit down in a corner of a classroom as much as possible. Surely children were main actors/actresses in a class this time.

自分の手が空いた時は、出来るだけ教室の隅の椅子に座って子供たちの様子を観察しました。モンテッソーリのコースでよく言われたのが、教師が歩きまわることで子供のスペースを奪ってはいけないということでした。確かに、身体の小さな子どもにとっては近くで大人がせわしなく動いていれば、気になるでしょうし、後ろをついていけば、子供たちも「見られている」というプレッシャーも感じるのかな、と思います。

今回、クラスには私とキッチン担当のシェフのみ。大人が存在感を消すと、子供たち同士で問題を話し合ったり、助け合ったり、という場面がよく見られました。お母さん・お父さんには、交代でそっとクラスの様子を見学してもらうこのシステムは、これからも続けていこうと思います。また同時に、子供たちにとってお母さんが近くにいる、と分かっていることもとても大切なようです。たくさんお仕事をした後、「ママと休憩してくる」と教室を出ていき、エネルギーがチャージされるとまた元気に戻ってきたり、何かが上手くいって嬉しい時に「できたぁ～！お母さんに見せたい！！」と休憩室へ走っていく子がいたり…。ほほえましい光景でした。


Children took turns to be a helper in kitchen. One washed cucumbers and cut them with knife. One rolled out the pizza dough and added some sauce and toppings. One prepared the table for lunch. One went to the study room and called parents for lunch.

子供たちは、交代でキッチンヘルパーにもなりました。きゅうりを切ったり、ピザ生地をのばしたり、トッピングをしたり、大活躍。


We had a pizza, tomato soup, tomato bread, cucumber salad for lunch. A boy asked me "Is this a cucumber I harvested before?" and when I said yes, he just smiled satisfactory.

「これ、きょうとったきゅうり？」「さっきとったなすはどこ？」と自分で収穫した野菜の使われ方は子供たちも気になる様子。農場の野菜を使ったシェフの美味しいスープやピザ、差し入れてもらったトマトソーダブレッド、みんなで作ったきゅうりのサラダで幸せなランチタイムでした。



After lunch, we went back to the farm. We all dug potatoes up! It was a fun activity, well, especially for mothers. I could see so much concentration of them:-)

Even though it's still the second time to hold a monthly class here, I learned a lot of things. The biggest learning is that you never can learn thing until you actually do it. Each time I think a lot and spend much time to prepare the class, but still I find things to improve or change in a classroom or in management. It's a long way for finding my perfect form of Montesori group, but I enjoy my class getting better each time and me getting more experienced in school management.

その後は、みんなでジャガイモの収穫。この暑さの中、最後まで子供以上に集中して掘ってくださったのがお母さんチーム。瞬く間にジャガイモの３分の２が掘り上げられました。１人ではなかなかこうはいきません。子供たちも掘ったジャガイモを畑からかごへ運ぶのを手伝ってくれました。

第２回目のモンテッソーリクラスも楽しい１日となりました。まだこのクラスが計画段階だった冬頃、あれこれ考えていたメモを見ると、「やってみたら全然違った」と感じることがたくさんあります。頭で考えていたよりずっと簡単に物事が進むこともあるし、その逆もあります。沢山学んだことがありますが、一番大きな学びは「やってみなくちゃ学べない」ということでしょうか。いくらシュミレーションして完璧だ！と思っても、何かしら小さな軌道修正は必ず出てきて、それを厭わずに改善していくことで安定した、また自分の理想に近いクラスが出来ていくんだなぁ、なんて思うこの頃です。
