Montessori Trial Class

Last Saturday, I had a Montessori class for English-speaking children with help of Jo. Though it's a Montessori class, as the emphasis of the class is put more for learning English part, the class had children with diverse range of age from 1.5 to 7 years old. It was my first time to handle a class with this variety, so I spent long time thinking how to prepare the classroom and worried a bit how the class would go.

先週の土曜日、農場では「英語モンテッソーリクラス」が開かれました。このクラスは、両親のどちらかの母語が英語である家庭の子供たちが、英語を話す機会を増やすために、また日本で教育を受けている彼らが、英語の読み書きをワークブック形式でなく学べる場を作るために、と企画されたものです。きっかけは、モンテッソーリのブログを通して知り合ったイギリス人のジョーさん。彼女がたまたま同じ埼玉に住んでいることが分かり、この企画が持ち上がったのです。

日本語のクラスは、モンテッソーリ環境で子供たちの成長を援助することを目的に、本来の2.5歳～6歳の子供たちで構成をしていますが、英語クラスの方は言語に重きを置くということで、1歳半から7歳までの子が土曜日は参加しました。またネイティブスピーカーのジョーに言語教材を受け持ってもらうことで、子供たちはより自然な英語の発音を学べるように配慮しました。

I arranged two shelves for language and math for older children and one shelf for 0-3 materials. Some traditional toys like blocks were also put out. Plus, there were cooking activities for all. Like I do with Japanese class, children picked up vegetables in the morning, and we made lunch together. Cooking is really a magical activity for children. 1.5 yrs old girl washed cucumbers and 7 yrs old boy chopped them for salad. 4 yrs old boy made the pizza dough and 2.8yrs old girl spread the tomato sauce on it and put the toppings on. For lunch, together with parents we all enjoyed pizza and salad children made, which were very tasty!

教室のセットアップをどうするかは長い間考えましたが、結局棚２つに言語・数の教材を、もう2つの棚に0－3歳用の教材とブロック・パズルなどのおもちゃを用意しました。
また、日本語クラスと同様、子供たちは朝野菜を収穫し、みんなでランチを作りました。1歳半の子が野菜を洗い、7歳の子がそれを切ったり、4歳の子がピザ生地をこね、3歳の子がトッピングをしたり、と子供たちの年齢に応じて出来ることが違いましたが、みんなでランチ作りを楽しみました。

In the afternoon, we had a color mixing activity. Children guessed what color would be made with mixing two colors, and checked the answer by him/herself. These are the result which children got.

午後は、色のアクティビティーを行いました。2つの色を混ぜると何色になるかを予測してから、粘土をまぜます。混ぜた結果が上の写真。マーブル状態でとどまってしまったものもありましたが、それはそれでとってもきれいです。


The second color activity was "Rainbow in a bag". Children enjoyed beautiful color mixture with light through window. These wonderful ideas are all from Jo. If you haven't seen her blog, you really should look into it. It has full of activities you can enjoy with your children at home or school!

From October, the farm will open a Montessori course for half a year for English-speaking children. If you live near Kawaguchi city and are interested in the course, I have trial lessons you can join on 11th and 19th of September. A few more places are available. 袋に色々な色を詰めてぐにゅぐにゅと色を混ぜた後、窓にそれを掲げると、光を受けた色がキラキラと光ります。
