Small guests from Tokyo

About two weeks ago, the farm got a group of children from international school in Tokyo. They came here as a school excursion and explored the farm. It was such a nice autumn day and I enjoyed their visit very much.

2週間ほど前、東京のインターナショナルスクールの生徒さん達が農場へ遠足に来てくれました！

ポカポカの太陽と澄みわたる空。農場探検には最高の一日となりました。


We cooked outside and had lunch together. In the afternoon, they visited my Montessori classroom, too. Hmm, I can't wait to start my daily school now! It was really a lovely day!

お散歩の後は、ランチをみんなで作って食べ、午後にはモンテッソーリの教室の見学・体験も。あっという間の、でもとても楽しい一日でした。

そして先週、クラスからお礼のカードを頂きました～！一生懸命書いてくれた絵に、子供たちの愛を感じます。

Today I got my second last lesson of yoga as my dearest teacher is leaving Japan in two weeks. She gave me her painting with these words as a present to me, so I'd like to share it with you.

Flowers in the farm

Magnolia flowers started blossoming while I was back in my hometown for several days last week. Since January, I've been enjoying the flower relay in the farm, starting from Tsubaki,Japanese witch hazel,Ume, peach, Mimoza and finally Sakura (cherry blossom)'s turn is coming soon. Spring in the farm is really fun!

農場では白連と木蓮が一斉に咲き始めました。梅が終わって少し寂しく思っていたところ。沈丁花もかわいらしい花をつけています。1月の椿から始まって、まんさく、梅、木瓜、あせび、連翹、土佐水木、さんしゅゆ、ミモザ、桃と花のリレーが続いています。次はついに桜。地元の安行桜はもう咲き始めた模様。春の農場は楽しいです。

The sign of spring

I found the first spring flower, Fukujyuso, in our garden! This flower is believed to be a sign of spring and good luck in Japan!;-)

福寿草、発見！庭の片隅にいつの間にかポッと出てくるこの花は、昔から春の訪れを告げる花とされてきたそうです。花言葉は「幸福を招く」。ついに、春が来た～。昔なら、わ～い！と喜ぶところですが、農家になってみると、春は草取り、竹の子、トマトの収穫、夏野菜の準備、と行事が沢山で、いささか戦闘モード。なかなかいつもスローライフ、とはいきませんが、季節に沿って生活のリズムが変わっていくのも、面白いです。

Some thought about diversity

In our vegetable field, a lot of different lives are growing together. Of course, vegetables, but also weeds, flowers, insects, worms...etc. What we try here is "natural farming" which is characterized by no pesticide, no chemical fertilizer, no plowing. Basically we don't remove weeds as they keep the soil soft and they offer the place to live for variety of insects. Not all the insects are enemy for vegetables. We just need to watch out the balance of , so called harmful ones and beneficial ones. Eventually all the life in the farm ends its life cycle and they go back to the soil becoming the nutrients for next life. It's "diversity" of lives that keeps bringing up life in the field. Taking care of this field reminds me of the importance of diversity in human society.

「自然農の畑」では、冬野菜が食べごろです。小松菜、ホウレンソウ、カブに春菊。この畑で育っているのは、野菜だけではありません。草、花、虫、みんな一緒に育っています。化学肥料、農薬を使わないこの畑では、少し土を掘り返すと色々な虫がわらわらと出てきます。野菜が育つ邪魔をしない限り、草はできるだけ抜きません。草の根が土を柔らかくすることと、草にはたくさんの生き物が集まってくるからです。虫は全て野菜にとって有害なのではなく、害虫と益虫と言われているもののバランスさえ目を配り、必要な時だけ手助けすれば野菜は育つのですね。畑の生き物は、虫も草もいずれその命を終え、土へと戻り、次の命を育む栄養となっていきます。畑に生きる命の多様性が、豊かな土壌を作り、次の命へとつながっていく。この営みを見ていると、人間社会における「多様性」の大切さ、にも心が向いていきます。

子供の教育でも、「個性を伸ばす」ということがよく言われますが、人はみんな生まれた時から十分個性的。ホウレンソウの若葉に「ほら、となりの小松菜ちゃんはあんなにほっそり。あなたもがんばって！」なんて声をかけても、ホウレンソウはホウレンソウ。葉っぱは横に大きく育ちます。それぞれ個性を持って生まれた赤ちゃんが、個性的なままであり続けるには、多様性を認める大人や社会が必要なのではないでしょうか。ちょうど畑が色々な命を無選別に受け入れるように…。

子供を育む土壌である大人が「人と違う自分」を肯定でき、自分の幸せの尺度に依って生きることができた時、それぞれに違う子供たちもまた、自分の「好き」や個性を大切に、幸せに育っていけるのではないかな、畑を見ながらそんなことを思いました。
