Summer report of Farm

It's been really really hot in Japan. With many people's help, the cleaning of the tomato house was done! Now we are ready for planting seeds, but...can you guess what we have in tomato bed? It's a pineapple! We decided to do a small experiment to grow a tree of pineapples and a tree of avocados in the house this year:-)

By the way, the avocado seed which I planted 1.5 month ago sprouted! I was so happy to see the small sprout! It's amazing this hard cover of a seed somehow cracked open!

I opened the container of Ume prams which I pickled last month. It was such an exciting moment. If something went wrong, there would be a lot of mold in the container. If everything went good, then there should be Ume with plenty of vinegar which oozed out of them.

Fortunately everything was OK. I took the prams out and dried them under the sun for 3 days. This process makes Ume pickles preservable longer. In Japanese diet, Ume pickle is such an inevitable basic item, so I'm happy to have this tasty-hopefully, safe, hand-made pickles.

My vegetables are competing a lot with weeds, but still I harvest eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, and okra. They are very strong!

When I'm not in the field, I work in the guest house/classroom to prepare some materials. I'm truly thankful to some blogs which offer download materials, especially language cards. Thank you, Susanne and Jo! Also I appreciate big help from my friends with sewing, laminating, cutting, setting the computer and painting!

I like how the toilet looks now, though it's still not complete. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the final colors of toilet walls!

More colors

I started some more painting in the guest house this week. This time, I'm painting the walls of toilet. Kyoka was here yesterday to chose the nice combination of colors. It was so much fun to work with her.

I started off with ripping the wall papers. It's been very humid and hot in Japan recently! I have to be creative and think of the ways to cheer me up. Taking before and after-photo is one thing making me realize how much I accomplished, so I took one.

When I finished ripping the papers and painted the glue, I played a bit to take a picture of myself for memory. One day, I'll make a book or story for children how this guest house/future Montessori school got renovated.

Montessori class in June

Last Saturday, we had a Montessori class in the farm. This time, I changed several things. I switched morning and afternoon programs, so mothers and children came to the farm, harvested the vegetables for lunch and quickly moved to Montessori house. Due to this change, we gathered at the farm half an hour earlier, at 9:30 so that children could have 2 hours of Montessori program before lunch. This change worked very well. Children didn't get too tired before Montessori activities and actually in the afternoon, they could run and move till the end of their energy without worrying getting muddy.

Before the class, I was a bit nervous how children behave in the classroom. Last month I showed them how we tidy up materials, how we wait a turn in the classroom...etc. They seemed very excited last month and I needed a lot of help from mothers to make them tidy up things.

One month has passed since the last class. I wondered how much they remember the rules. However, my worry was swept away at the moment children came into the classroom. A boy said "I'll try this" pointing at red rods and went off for bringing a mat for him. A girl was looking at him carrying red rods and suddenly said "Oh, you shouldn't carry them together. One at a time!". You can't imagine how much I was amazed by them!! This girl smiled and said to me "I'll go for watering the plant."

2 hours in the morning passed very calmly. One big change during the activities was parents stayed in the study room and took turns to come and observe the class. I think too many adults in a class gives children the feeling that they are seen all the time. This time, there were only me and a friend of mine who offered her help in kitchen. She was busy preparing lunch for all and I tried to sit down in a corner of a classroom as much as possible. Surely children were main actors/actresses in a class this time.

Children took turns to be a helper in kitchen. One washed cucumbers and cut them with knife. One rolled out the pizza dough and added some sauce and toppings. One prepared the table for lunch. One went to the study room and called parents for lunch.

We had a pizza, tomato soup, tomato bread, cucumber salad for lunch. A boy asked me "Is this a cucumber I harvested before?" and when I said yes, he just smiled satisfactory.

After lunch, we went back to the farm. We all dug potatoes up! It was a fun activity, well, especially for mothers. I could see so much concentration of them:-)

Even though it's still the second time to hold a monthly class here, I learned a lot of things. The biggest learning is that you never can learn thing until you actually do it. Each time I think a lot and spend much time to prepare the class, but still I find things to improve or change in a classroom or in management. It's a long way for finding my perfect form of Montesori group, but I enjoy my class getting better each time and me getting more experienced in school management.

The season of Shiso (Perilla)

In our garden, Shiso is growing well. In Japan, Shiso leaves are said to be rich in iron and calcium and used for seasoning, coloring, pickling and garnishing. Last week, I learned how to make Shiso juice from a friend of mine, so I tried her recipe today.

Ingredients:
-300g of red perilla leaves
-1L of water
-300g of sugar
-100cc of rice vinegar
1) Take off leaves from the stem and wash them with water.

2)Boil water and put all the leaves in.
3)Boil for 5-10minutes until Shiso leaves turn green.
4)Take out the leaves and add vinegar and sugar.
It was interesting to see the color of the juice changing when I added some vinegar!

Now as you see, it's a beautiful red purple! I like to drink it with soda water. It's such a summer taste for me! :-)

A visit of Montessori group

It's been very hot in my area of Japan. It's 32 degrees today and getting hard for me to work in the field, though I can't miss picking up delicious mulberries.

Last Saturday, our farm got a nice group of visit including 5 children who go to Montessori school. It was so exciting to actually meet people who I only know by blogs and I could share my Montessori passion with. On Jo's blog, you could read the post about the farm. The farm looks very nice on her pictures! Well, actually it is:-)

Here is Jo's blog, "A Bit of This and A Bot of That".
Her another blog, "The Montessori Goldmine" has full of wonderful Montessori resources.
Thank you very much for visiting us, Jo! It was so great to have met you!

The first Montessori class in Farm

Last Saturday, I had the first Montessori class in the farm. When I thought the program of this class, I really wanted to make the chance which gets children connected to nature. So, in the morning we first made the dough of bread for lunch and started off with field tour all together.

Everyone had a chance to walk around the vegetable field and listened to the explanation how vegetables grow. We picked up fresh peas, carrots and garlic! I gave a loupe to each child, and they were keen on checking leaves with it.

Our cats are important part of our farm. It's interesting to see how Mie(our cat) and children play!

Around noon, we made the fire and baked the bread. After 5 minutes, it got parents' role to hold the bamboo stick, but I think it was OK. So much nice chatting we had around the fire:-)

In this class, I also wanted to care that all the participants cook and enjoy the vegetables from the field. We were so honoured to have Takako to come here as a chef. Look at this beautiful salad with Bagna Cauda sauce!!

Since this is a Montessori class, she thought of Italian menu! We had our yummy bread, Bagna Cauda, tomato&Mozzarella salad, Minestrone soup, and baked beans. How fortunate of us to have this lovely meal outside.

In the afternoon, children worked in the classroom. Since this is only once a month Montessori class at the moment, I prepared the environment differently from ordinary Montessori class. I only had several basic materials for children's age and got mother's help for making child tidying up.

One of my aims of this class is giving mothers some tips what children can do at home as well as giving children a chance to experience Montessori materials. Every time I plan to have some time only with parents discussing a topic like the meaning of practical life activities, observation, home environment...etc.

It was such a wonderful day last Sunday, and I'm very excited to continue seeing these children regularly in the class!

"TERAKOYA" project

"Terakoya" was a place where Japanese commoners, who were not allowed to get higher education, gathered and learned writing, reading, abacus, history and geography in 17th century. Each Terakoya had a head teacher, but all of the participants took care of each other, sharing their knowledge and skills.

Last week, we opened the modern version of Terakoya in the guest house. Every Tuesday evenings from 19:30-21;30, we have "Language Terakoya" for high school students and adults. People who have interested in learning foreign languages get gathered and study what they want to. We have textbooks for English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Japanese, so people are free to use any of them. It's really fun and I get so much inspiration from people.

On Wednesday evenings from 19:30-21:00, we have Terakoya for junior high school students. I help them with homework or the subject they have difficulty to understand school class. What we do here is very different from other cram schools in Japan. We talk a lot with students and find what they are interested in, and introduce them interesting books or advice how to study what they like to.

In the bookshelf, there are many books which fulfill students' curiosity. The biggest aim is helping students self-education.
I enjoy so much of chatting with them! Their school life, family story, club activities, boyfriend/girlfriend story...:-) They are full of energy and living the moment!
