Summer report of Farm

It's been really really hot in Japan. With many people's help, the cleaning of the tomato house was done! Now we are ready for planting seeds, but...can you guess what we have in tomato bed? It's a pineapple! We decided to do a small experiment to grow a tree of pineapples and a tree of avocados in the house this year:-)

暑い日が続いています。トマトハウスの掃除は、たくさんの方の協力を得て、無事に終了しました。後は種をまくのみですが、今年は種まき前にちょっと実験。トマト以外のものをハイポニカで育てたらどうなるんだろう、という私たちの好奇心を満たすべく、パイナップルとアボガドを一株ずつ育ててみることにしました。どう成長するのかは、まったく未知の世界。とりあえず、パイナップルの頭をいつものトマトのベッドに植えてみました。今のところ、大丈夫そう！？です。


By the way, the avocado seed which I planted 1.5 month ago sprouted! I was so happy to see the small sprout! It's amazing this hard cover of a seed somehow cracked open!

もう2カ月近く前に蒔いたアボガドの種から、芽が出てきました！こちらは植木鉢に植えたものです。あんなに固い種が自然に割れて、ピョコンと小さな芽が飛び出してます。


I opened the container of Ume prams which I pickled last month. It was such an exciting moment. If something went wrong, there would be a lot of mold in the container. If everything went good, then there should be Ume with plenty of vinegar which oozed out of them.

そして先月漬けた梅干し。大丈夫と信じながらも、毎回蓋を開けるときはドキドキです。かびだらけだったらどうしよう？上手くいってますように、と期待と不安の混じった気持ちで蓋を開けたら…


Fortunately everything was OK. I took the prams out and dried them under the sun for 3 days. This process makes Ume pickles preservable longer. In Japanese diet, Ume pickle is such an inevitable basic item, so I'm happy to have this tasty-hopefully, safe, hand-made pickles.

大丈夫でした。初めて作った梅干しだけど、本当に美味しい！3日ほど天日で干しました。梅酢もたくさんできたから、これからお料理に使えそうです。


My vegetables are competing a lot with weeds, but still I harvest eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, and okra. They are very strong!

「自然農の畑」は名前を返上して「自然の畑」の方がいいかもしれません。暑すぎて、草むしりまで手が回らず、草に負けなかった野菜を収穫して食べています。なす、ピーマン、きゅうり、ゴーヤ、おくら、意外に沢山の野菜が食べられます。野菜も強い！


When I'm not in the field, I work in the guest house/classroom to prepare some materials. I'm truly thankful to some blogs which offer download materials, especially language cards. Thank you, Susanne and Jo! Also I appreciate big help from my friends with sewing, laminating, cutting, setting the computer and painting!

農場にいる時間以外は、もっぱらゲストハウスで教材を作ったり、ペンキを塗ったりして過ごしています。縫物、ラミネート、カードのカット、コンピューターの仕事、やることは無数にありますが、得意分野が様々な、たくさんの友人に助けられてプロジェクトは進んでいます。


I like how the toilet looks now, though it's still not complete. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the final colors of toilet walls!

トイレもこんなに進みました！メタリックブルーでかっこいい感じです。またレポートします。

More colors

I started some more painting in the guest house this week. This time, I'm painting the walls of toilet. Kyoka was here yesterday to chose the nice combination of colors. It was so much fun to work with her.

ゲストハウスにて、久々のペンキ塗りプロジェクト開始です。今回は、トイレ。行くのが楽しくなるようなトイレを目指します。昨日はきょうかさんに、たくさんのサンプルを作ってもらって色を決めました。

I started off with ripping the wall papers. It's been very humid and hot in Japan recently! I have to be creative and think of the ways to cheer me up. Taking before and after-photo is one thing making me realize how much I accomplished, so I took one.

壁紙をはがすのも久しぶり。無心でベリベリ、ベリベリ。考えなくてもいい作業って、なぜかリフレッシュします。ただし、2.5畳ほどのトイレは蒸し暑く、まるでサウナ！


When I finished ripping the papers and painted the glue, I played a bit to take a picture of myself for memory. One day, I'll make a book or story for children how this guest house/future Montessori school got renovated.

壁紙はがしを終え、シーラーを塗り終わったところ。1枚記念写真を撮りました。少しずつ前進していることが分かるのが、作業の励みになります。日本の夏は暑い～！

"TERAKOYA" project

"Terakoya" was a place where Japanese commoners, who were not allowed to get higher education, gathered and learned writing, reading, abacus, history and geography in 17th century. Each Terakoya had a head teacher, but all of the participants took care of each other, sharing their knowledge and skills.

Last week, we opened the modern version of Terakoya in the guest house. Every Tuesday evenings from 19:30-21;30, we have "Language Terakoya" for high school students and adults. People who have interested in learning foreign languages get gathered and study what they want to. We have textbooks for English, German, Spanish, French, Chinese and Japanese, so people are free to use any of them. It's really fun and I get so much inspiration from people.

農場のゲストハウス1階部分が、現代版寺子屋に生まれ変わりました。先週から稼働し始めた寺子屋プロジェクト。今日で2週目です。毎週火曜日の夜が「言語寺子屋」。外国語勉強中の人達が集まり、各々好きな場所で勉強します。英語に関しては私が質問等に答えますが、他言語については基本的に独学です。家で一人で勉強するのはちょっと…という方に好評です。言語は違えど、進度を励ましあったり、勉強に対する情熱に刺激を受けたり、とこの場所だから得られるものも沢山あります。


On Wednesday evenings from 19:30-21:00, we have Terakoya for junior high school students. I help them with homework or the subject they have difficulty to understand school class. What we do here is very different from other cram schools in Japan. We talk a lot with students and find what they are interested in, and introduce them interesting books or advice how to study what they like to.

水曜日は中学生限定の寺子屋。学校の勉強も見ますが、もっと大切にしているのが、子供たちとのコミュニケーション。色々な話を聞きながら、その子の興味のあるものをどう勉強したらいいかアドバイスしたり、こんな面白い本があるよ、と紹介したり。私の雑談の混じることも多いですが、そんな中から、「勉強って面白い！こんな風に世の中とつながってるんだ」と分かったり、「高校に入ったらこんな活動もしくは勉強してみたいな」なんて思うような子が出てきてくれたら嬉しいです。

In the bookshelf,there are many books which fulfill students' curiosity. The biggest aim is helping students self-education.
I enjoy so much of chatting with them! Their school life, family story, club activities, boyfriend/girlfriend story...:-) They are full of energy and living the moment!

本棚には、外国語のテキストやら、アトラス、写真集など、好奇心を掻き立てるものがいっぱい詰まっています。「教える」のがメインでなく、子供が「自分で勉強する」のをお手伝いする寺子屋。今後が楽しみです。

Coloring days

We decided to color the living room of the guest house(Genzaemon studio). So, my piano was covered with wall paper so that it won't get any paint.

源左衛門スタジオのリビングです。ペンキを塗る前の下準備として、家具を動かし、ピアノを壁紙でくるみました。


Making the yellow Kyoka and I want for this room took long. Adding white and black little by little to yellow made these different shades. To be honest, I had difficulty seeing the differences in them. As Kyoka works as a professional artist, she has much more refined eyes I guess.

この部屋のイメージは前からイエローと決めていたのですが、なかなかイメージ通りの色を作るのが大変でした。私には違いが分からないぐらいまで、微調整をしてくれたきょうかさんのおかげで、「そう、この色の感じ！」という色ができました。


Finally we chose the yellow we want, but the color looked slightly diffrent on the wall! So, we added a little bit of more black and were satisfied with the color.

早速壁に塗ってみると…あれれ、ちょっと黄色が派手すぎちゃう、ということでまたもや色の調合へ。紙と壁とで色の出方って随分と変わるものなんだ、と勉強になりました。


This is the result. Now the room has peaceful atmosphere.Oh, I still have to color the edge.

結果はこちら。まだ縁周りを塗っていませんが、真っ白だった時よりも部屋の雰囲気が優しくなりました。


On the second floor, I keep my Montessori 3-6 materials. I already opened half of the material boxes arrived from USA. It's so exciting and nice to touch the materials again! It's almost like seeing the best friends whom I haven't met for a while. At the end of this month, I'll handle a small group of mother and child to introduce Montessori education to them.
I'm very happy that I finally can start my Montessori project so soon. Since I came back to Japan, I've been helping organizing the farm a lot so that my husband can run it by himself. Also I feel the family culture of Gen's mother, Gen and I has been developing, which means each of us cooperates to run the family and finds one's rhythm to live together comfortably. Keeping the balance of farm projects, family and my projects has been and will be the most important issue to me and so far I think I did great!

２階には、モンテッソーリの教具がずらり。まだこれでも半分しか開封していません。というのも、教具に触るのが楽しすぎ、またドイツでのコース、幼稚園、色々な事が思い出され、教具を片手に感慨にひたることもしばしばなのです。
日本に帰国して以来、農場の仕事、家庭、自分のプロジェクトと半年間バランスを取りながら進んで来ましたが、ようやく、そしていよいよ！モンテッソーリの時期到来。今後もバランスを取りながら、自分のペースで進んでいこうと思っています。

Colors!

Genzaemon studio project has come to its fun phase! Last week, Kyoka and I had a serious meeting of what color goes for where.

源左衛門スタジオプロジェクト、楽しくなってきました。遂に、白以外のペンキを塗る日が来ました！先週はきょうかさんと、どこに何色を塗ろうか、作戦会議。


So, we decided to paint the wall in hallway metaric-blue! It's an impressive color!

さんざん迷って、廊下はメタリックブルーに決定！メタリックと言えども、落ち着いた色なので廊下が暗くなってしまわないか心配でしたが、塗ってみたら迫力満点！カッコイイです。


Half of the kictchen walls were painted sky-green.

そして、前から楽しみにしていたキッチンはスカイグリーンと…


Other walls and ceiling of the kitchen will be lotus-pink! It's been my dream to have a pink-kicchen since I was a girl:-)
I think colors have special powers to make people creative. It's so pleasant to be in this kitchen!!

ロータスピンク！キッチンの半分の壁と天井はこの色です。幼稚園時代、ピンクのキッチンっていいな、なんて思っていたのが、25年も経って実現しました。 それにしても、色のパワーって不思議。キッチンにいると、心が躍り出します！

The end of KURA project

Finally Kura project was done! It's the picture of the entrance for KURA. The big door was made of cedar trees. In one part, we put glass so that the sunlight can come inside Kura.

ついに蔵プロジェクトが終わりました。今日は改修した蔵ツアー！お楽しみ下さい。
まずは、入口。昔は開口していたところへ、さわらの木の引き戸をつけ、一部は光を中に取り込むためガラスにしました。


When you see right, you can have a view of beautiful white walls.
入って右を見ると、美しく塗られた白いしっくいの壁。


When you see left, you can have a view of second floor.
入って左を見れば、ロフトになっている２階部分が見えます。


When you climb the stairs, you'll enjoy close look of the ceiling.
階段を登れば、大迫力の天井の梁。杉の木です。


When you look down, you'll see warm sunlight coming in. These chairs are for you!:-) Please come and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere here!

登って下を見れば、暖かいこもれ陽。凛としていると同時に、とても心落ち着く空間です。耳を澄ませば周りの竹林を通る風の音、鳥の鳴き声も聞こえます。オフィスをここに移転したら「居心地が良すぎて畑からすぐ帰ってきちゃう～。」と困った悩みも。蔵プロジェクトをお手伝いいただいた皆々さま、本当にありがとうございました。是非また遊びに来てください！

The 4th report of Kura project + Kimchi workshop!

Last week, we had the final workshop of Kura project. This time our aim was plastering the walls upstairs. As we planned the Kimchi-making-workshop last Saturday, a lot of people came and joined plastering. By the end of the weekend, two thirds of the walls were done!

ワークショップとして蔵プロジェクトに取り組むのは、先週末が最終回。キムチ作りパーティーも同時に主催した結果、たくさんの方に参加してもらい、蔵もほぼ出来上がり。２階部分のしっくい塗り、半分を残すところとなりました。


Now I can't wait to write about Kimchi(Korean pickles-VERY spicy!) workshop. All 20 participants needed to bring an apron and rubber gloves. People were very curious waiting the workshop to be started.

このキムチの会に集まった人数、なんと３歳から大人まで２０人。集まった人数も凄ければ、漬けたキムチの量も半端ではありません。


This time we prepared 20 Chinese cabbages for making Kimchi.

前日、源一郎氏、お義母さん、キムチ講師のTAKAKOさん、私の４人で下準備。積み上げられた２０株の白菜、ドドーンと迫力満点で積み上げれられています。 これらすべてがキムチに変身するのです。


A day before the workshop, Gen, Gen's mom, Takako(our Kimchi teacher) and I cut all the chinese cabbages each into 6 small pieces. Then we rubbed them with salt...

この２０株の白菜を６等分して、塩を葉と葉の間に揉み込みました。


and kept them in the huge barrel for a night so that they lose some water. Wow, it was such an unbelievable amount of chinese cabbages!!

塩もみされた白菜は大きな樽へ寝かせ、上から漬物石をのせて一晩塩漬けに。こんな大きな樽が白菜でいっぱい！


On the kimchi workshop day, we washed all the pieces of chinese cabbages to rinse the salt out, which was such a massive work! Then we cut up 10 Japanese radishes and 5 carrots into small stripes, chopped up 15 onions and 10 leaks, ground 1kg of ginger and 10 apples. Glad that many people came for this workshop. The picture shows the broth of SHITAKE(Japanese mushroom), Kombu(kelp), and Niboshi(dried small sardine).

そして当日、この１２０ピースになった白菜を全て水洗いして塩を落とし、固く水を切ります。考えただけでも大変な仕事！ですが、現役大学生を筆頭に元気いっぱいの若者たちががんばってくれました。
洗い隊に続き、切り隊の方たち。大根１０本、人参５本を千切り、にら５束、ネギ１０本、にんにく１５個をみじん切りに。そして、すり隊。りんご１０個、生姜１キロをすりおろし。どの仕事もみんなでワイワイおしゃべりしながら、あっという間に！とはいきませんが、楽しく出来たのではないかと思っています。
写真は、この日のために煮出しただし汁です。


Then we mixed Korean chili powder, all the ingredients we chopped and ground, the broth, the rice porridge, opossum shrimp,and UME(Japanese apricot) syrup. It was fun to see red steam emerging and people coughing when we added warm broth into chili powder;-)

このだし汁を韓国製唐辛子パウダーの入ったボウルへ投入。そこに切った野菜、もち米のお粥、アミ、梅シロップを混ぜると写真のようになります。


The final stage was putting this red chili paste into each leaf of chinese cabbage. From the moment you put this chili paste, Kimchi starts fermenting and the taste of it deepens every day. Yum,yum!

最後は水を切った白菜にこの唐辛子ペーストを塗り込んで、出来上がり！真っ赤に染まるテーブルと強烈なニンニクの匂い、大量のキムチ。いつもの農場に、ここは韓国！？と見まごうような風景が広がっていました。


In the late afternoon, when everybody packed Kimchi in their Tupperware to bring home, we started Kimchi party together with Koran barbecue and Korean rice wine. It was such a fun Saturday!

お持ち帰りキムチを各自タッパーに詰めたら、韓国パーティーの始まり。マッコリ、キムチ、焼肉、チゲ鍋、おいしく食べて飲んで働いた、楽しい１日でした。参加して下さった皆様、講師のTakakoさん、この場を借りてお礼申し上げます。

The second report of KURA project

I'm always amazed with the beauty of natural colour! Though it's December, it's still warm and sunny in central part of Japan.

時々、畑の木々の色にはっと驚かされます。人工では決して出せない秋の色。12月といえども、まだまだ暖かい日が続いています。去年の今頃、ミュンヘンではもう雪がちらほら。なつかしくも思いますが、私にはこの暖かい冬のほうが身体に合っているよう。ポカポカのお日様、大好きです。


Last weekend, we had the second workshop of KURA project. This time our goal was claying all the walls. Before claying, we masked the floor.

先週末は蔵プロジェクト第2弾。今回の目標は、柱を養生し、壁にしっくいをぬること。案外、マスキングの丁寧さが仕上がりの美しさを決めていることに気づきました。


Then, we practiced claying on the small board.

まずは小さなボードで塗り方を練習。


Silence...So much concentration. I felt like being in a Montessori classroom:-)

いったん塗り始めたらみんな真剣そのもの。すごい集中力です。壁、一枚ずつの塗り後に個性が出るから不思議です。私の塗った壁には、みんなから「なるほどね～」のコメント…。「なるほど、素晴らしい！」の意味で解釈しました。


After two days of claying, most of the walls were done. Next weekend will be our last workshop on this Kura. I can't wait to see the final figure!

2日間で大半の壁を塗り終えました。残りは来週少しずつ、そして週末にはまたワークショップで、色々な方の手を借りて蔵を仕上げていきます。いよいよ完成間近。楽しみです。

The first report of KURA project

Last weekend, we worked on KURA with our friends and our architect team. We had two missions to achieve. The fist one is making plaster to cover the wall, and the second one is making stairs.

先週末は、蔵プロジェクト第一弾。しっくい作りと階段作りが行われました。お天気に恵まれ、楽しく実りある週末となりました。


Here is the plaster already made by our architect team. We need three containers full of plaster. It's a lot of work to mix quick lime with water. When lime gets wet, it becomes boiling hot. We need them to cool down for a week before using it.

建築家チームによるしっくい作り。生石灰と水を混ぜて作ります。生石灰に水を入れると、まるで温泉のように石灰がボコボコっと音をたてます。ものすごく高温になるため、壁に塗るためには一週間、冷まさなければならないそう。ドラム缶3個分のしっくい作りは、なかなか大変です。みんな石灰で真っ白になりながらの作業でした。


Gen made the wooden board for the steps for the stairs.

その間、源一郎氏は階段にはめこむ板を削っています。今回の階段は、農場にある大量のけやきの板を活かして、総ケヤキで作ることになりました。


Kyoka made the stairs smooth.

階段の大枠は大工さんに作って、とりつけてもらいました。お手伝いに来てくれたきょうかさんが、階段にやすりをかけてくれています。


I made the wooden nail to cover the holes which Gen made for fixing the steps. It was such a small job but needed a lot of concentration and patience. I was so picky with making wooden pattern of the nail as close as the one of the step so that people even don't realize that there was a hole. I think I'm too Japanese.

私の仕事は、階段に打ち込まれた釘を木でカバーすること。なるべく木目を合わせて、穴にあうような木の釘を作ります。きれいにできると、釘の存在を全く感じさせない階段になります。この小さなところへのこだわりが、日本らしい！


Sunday evening, the stairs finished! SO beautiful! All made from Keyaki tree.
日曜日の夜、様々な人の助けを借りて、ついに階段完成！ 猫のミーちゃんが得意げに座っています。


Our electrician fixed some lights on. I love the atmosphere of this KURA. Very warm and comfortable. Gen and I stayed a while here after all the work, listening to a radio of jazz piano. It was such a beautiful evening.

ライトも取り付けられて、前よりも蔵が明るく、梁もきれいに見えるように。仕事後、ミーと源一郎氏と3人で、音楽を聴きながら蔵で一息。心地よい夕方でした。

KURA project has started!

Finally KURA (renovating the old storage) project came to take its first step! This Kura was built when Gen's great-grand father was the chief of this farm. What is amazing is that it's built only with bamboo and soil.
Gen has been dreaming to have his office in this KURA(so cool!)and the specialized architect team came last week to decide how to renovate the wall.

ついに蔵プロジェクトが動き出しました。ひいお爺さんが建てたと言われるこの蔵、今もとても良い状態で残っていますが、今回はこの蔵を農場のオフィスとしてリノベーションします。



Firt, we need to decide if we can reinforce the wall only with putting another layer of clay or we need to scratch the original layer off from the wall first and then make completely new wall. When we scratched off a part of the wall, we could see the fine foundation for the wall which is made by bamboo.
Finally our architects concluded that we don't need to reinforce the bamboo basement as bamboos and original walls are quite solid, so we basically need to make one more coating for the wall so that the old wall doesn't spread dust and Gen can keep the clean air in the office.

先週は「蔵チーム」の専門家たちが、蔵の構造をチェックしに来てくれました。蔵をオフィスとして使うためには、今の壁を補強しないと、土埃で大変なことになりそう…壁にそのまま漆喰を塗るか、もしくは一度全て壁をはがして、一から作り直すか。とりあえずみんなで壁の内部を見るためこすり取ってみました。出てきたのは、丁寧に組まれた竹木舞！「しっかりしてる！！」
結局、壁ははがれてきた表面のみを軽くブラシでこすり取って、そのまま上に漆喰を塗っていくことになりました。



We made the different kinds of clay: the yellowish one is plaster + yellow sand, the second one is plaster + sand from river, the third one is plaster + sand + straw.
According to our architect, the final colour appears a few days later! Gen and I have been observing it every day with curious eyes!

次なる課題は、どの漆喰を塗るかということ。色と質感を見るために、3種類の漆喰を作って塗ってみました。上から、漆喰＋瀬戸の砂、漆喰＋川砂、漆喰＋川砂＋わら、です。色は漆喰が完全に乾いて定着するまで変わり続けるそう。毎日、興味深く見つめています。 11月、12月は蔵プロジェクト（壁塗り）で忙しくなりそうです。
