The very first magazine which featured Montessori education was published last week in Japan! This magazine shows many aspects of Montessori education. Probably this is the first time Montessori education got so much attention in Japan. I'm very happy about it. The magazine has articles of AMI trainer and several Japanese Montessori teachers talking about activities inside & outside the classroom. This is such a helpful tool when I need to explain what I have learned these years!

The sign of spring

I found the first spring flower, Fukujyuso, in our garden! This flower is believed to be a sign of spring and good luck in Japan!;-)

The Edible Schoolyard

I've just finished reading the book "The Edible Schoolyard" and got so excited to know how farming, harvesting and cooking can integrate to school cariculum. Alice Waters, the founder of Chez Panisse Foundation, started this Edible schoolyrad project. In the book, she said she studied Montessori and had an experience of working in the Montessori school! How cool!

I feel Montessori idea and farm environement can create multiple effect. Growing vegetables, taking care of them, cooking and eating them can teach children so many things including how plants grow, natural cycle and seasonality, varieties of colours in nature, positive interaction with adults and other children...etc.

Here is some information about what the Edible Schoolyard is.

The Edible Schoolyard (ESY) consists of a thriving one-acre organic garden and kitchen classroom at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, a public school for grades 6, 7, and 8, in Berkeley, California.
Each student at King Middle School participates in the Edible Schoolyard. Garden classes introduce them to the origins of food, plant life cycles, community values, and the pleasures of work, while kitchen classes allow them to prepare and eat delicious, nutritious, seasonal dishes made from produce they have grown in the garden.
Fall 2008 marked the opening of the Dining Commons, a new lunchroom for King School. Designed to engage students, the Dining Commons features on-site composting and recycling stations and real tableware. The Dining Commons presents myriad opportunities to connect garden, kitchen, classroom, and lunchroom experiences.

Mission & Goals
The mission of the Edible Schoolyard is to create and sustain an organic garden and landscape that is wholly integrated into the school’s curriculum, culture, and food program.
ESY involves students in all aspects of farming the garden and preparing, serving, and eating food as a means of awakening their senses and encouraging awareness and appreciation of the transformative values of nourishment, community, and stewardship of the land.

Guiding Principles
The following principles guide the Edible Schoolyard program.

Participatory: Classes in the kitchen and garden model sustainable practices and engage children in hands-on lessons that connect food, health, and the environment.

Integrated: The program is linked to the academic curriculum through math, science, and the humanities.

Shared: ESY creates opportunities for children to share a family-style meal together with teachers and adult volunteers.

Delicious: ESY serves food that is local, organic, and seasonal.

Beautiful: Our program is designed to inspire personal and social responsibility, and to serve as a model for other schools.

The end of KURA project

Finally Kura project was done! It's the picture of the entrance for KURA. The big door was made of cedar trees. In one part, we put glass so that the sunlight can come inside Kura.

When you see right, you can have a view of beautiful white walls.

When you see left, you can have a view of second floor.

When you climb the stairs, you'll enjoy close look of the ceiling.

When you look down, you'll see warm sunlight coming in. These chairs are for you!:-) Please come and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere here!

The 4th report of Kura project + Kimchi workshop!

Last week, we had the final workshop of Kura project. This time our aim was plastering the walls upstairs. As we planned the Kimchi-making-workshop last Saturday, a lot of people came and joined plastering. By the end of the weekend, two thirds of the walls were done!

Now I can't wait to write about Kimchi(Korean pickles-VERY spicy!) workshop. All 20 participants needed to bring an apron and rubber gloves. People were very curious waiting the workshop to be started.

This time we prepared 20 Chinese cabbages for making Kimchi.

A day before the workshop, Gen, Gen's mom, Takako(our Kimchi teacher) and I cut all the chinese cabbages each into 6 small pieces. Then we rubbed them with salt...

and kept them in the huge barrel for a night so that they lose some water. Wow, it was such an unbelievable amount of chinese cabbages!!

On the kimchi workshop day, we washed all the pieces of chinese cabbages to rinse the salt out, which was such a massive work! Then we cut up 10 Japanese radishes and 5 carrots into small stripes, chopped up 15 onions and 10 leaks, ground 1kg of ginger and 10 apples. Glad that many people came for this workshop. The picture shows the broth of SHITAKE(Japanese mushroom), Kombu(kelp), and Niboshi(dried small sardine).

Then we mixed Korean chili powder, all the ingredients we chopped and ground, the broth, the rice porridge, opossum shrimp, and UME(Japanese apricot) syrup. It was fun to see red steam emerging and people coughing when we added warm broth into chili powder;-)

The final stage was putting this red chili paste into each leaf of chinese cabbage. From the moment you put this chili paste, Kimchi starts fermenting and the taste of it deepens every day. Yum,yum!

In the late afternoon, when everybody packed Kimchi in their Tupperware to bring home, we started Kimchi party together with Koran barbecue and Korean rice wine. It was such a fun Saturday!

Topponcino

Here comes my Topponcino report! Topponcino is a kind of cusion which is used to carry a baby. It is such a convenient item as it can be used in many situations. You can use it when you hold your baby for sleeping, take her to the bath, pass her to your family or your friends. As a baby spends a lot of time Topponcino, she becomes familier to it and starts feeling secure on it.

Materials:
-Bedpad (I used old wool blanket which I washed with cold water to prevent shrinking)
-cotton cloth for covering bedpad
-cotton cloth for the final cover

I made the paper pattern looking at the Topponcino I made in the Montessori course in Sweden. You can make it a bit bigger or smaller. I think the most important thing is that you feel comfortable carrying it and it's not too small for a baby.

First, I folded the blanket and cut it out according to the paper pattern. I put some cotton inside the wool pieces so that it becomes soft enough for a baby.

Here I made the cover for wool pieces. When you make this cover, don't forget that you cut 1~1.5cm away from the pattern. Also, you need to leave one side of the cover open to put the wool pieces in.

When the cover is done, put the wool pieces in and sew the part of the cover which is open. Then, fix the inside and cover. I made 5 big stitches as you can see in the picture.

I made the final cover using my pillow case I bought in Hemtex located in Varberg, Sweden! This cloth reminds me a lot of my life up there:-) Again, when you make the final cover, don't foreget to cut a few centimeters away from the paper pattern. Also, I made the lower part of the cover straight, not U shape as the pattern. My idea is leaving the very bottom open and putting the velcros so that we can change the cover when it's necessary.

It's done! I put two velcros down inside the cover. Now I see my cat is bigger than a baby!

The second report of KURA project

I'm always amazed with the beauty of natural colour! Though it's December, it's still warm and sunny in central part of Japan.

Last weekend, we had the second workshop of KURA project. This time our goal was claying all the walls. Before claying, we masked the floor.

Then, we practiced claying on the small board.

Silence...So much concentration. I felt like being in a Montessori classroom:-)

After two days of claying, most of the walls were done. Next weekend will be our last workshop on this Kura. I can't wait to see the final figure!
