Montessori Class in August

Last Saturday we had the August Montessori class. For the first time, children tried "walking on line", one of the Montessori activities to foster the balance of the body. This was the fifth time I held the monthly class, so I was able to be calmer than before and observe children more in neutral state.

What I like about this monthly class is that children get to meet other parents and siblings of their friends. Before and after the class, during lunch time, they observe each other, talk and play together. It was lovely to see children taking care of the baby.

My first try for playdoh

I didn't know that I could make playdoh by myself until Jo gave me her recipe. It looked very simple, but it worked really good!

What you need are: 1 cup of flour, 1 tbsp of oil, Half cup of salt, food color, 1 tbsp of "cream of tartar"

I first didn't understand what "cream of tartar" is. I asked my husband if he has ever heard about this and he thought I was making fun of him with my imaginary product. The reactions from the shop staffs were pretty much the same. They said "What? Hah?" and looked at me as if I were a stranger from other planet. I found that there is a web-shop which is specialized in baking ingredients and they can deliver it to me, but it was too late for the class, so I made my playdoh without it. "Cream of tartar" is still not so popular in Japan it seems.

First I mixed oil, salt, food color and water and stirred. Then I added flour, mixed it in the pan, kept the dough till it cooled down and kneaded it to be smooth. Apparently I didn't measured the flour correctly, so my playdoh was a bit sticky.

Here is my first playdoh I made! For the first try, I think I did OK!:-)Just will be more careful with measuring next time.

My second art activity for the class was making the colors for "Rainbow in a bag". Again Jo's recipe was very clear and I enjoyed making it.

What you need are: 1 cup of corn starch, 1/3 cup of sugar, food coloring, 4 cups of water

Put corn starch, sugar and water in a pan and heat it till it gets thick. Then remove the pan from heat and wait till it gets cool. Put the thing into 3 bowls. Add some food color and mix it well.

For me, mixing the food color part was so much fun!! Colors are so vibrant! Thank you very much for wonderful recipes, Jo!

Montessori Trial Class

Last Saturday, I had a Montessori class for English-speaking children with help of Jo. Though it's a Montessori class, as the emphasis of the class is put more for learning English part, the class had children with diverse range of age from 1.5 to 7 years old. It was my first time to handle a class with this variety, so I spent long time thinking how to prepare the classroom and worried a bit how the class would go.

I arranged two shelves for language and math for older children and one shelf for 0-3 materials. Some traditional toys like blocks were also put out. Plus, there were cooking activities for all. Like I do with Japanese class, children picked up vegetables in the morning, and we made lunch together. Cooking is really a magical activity for children. 1.5 yrs old girl washed cucumbers and 7 yrs old boy chopped them for salad. 4 yrs old boy made the pizza dough and 2.8yrs old girl spread the tomato sauce on it and put the toppings on. For lunch, together with parents we all enjoyed pizza and salad children made, which were very tasty!

In the afternoon, we had a color mixing activity. Children guessed what color would be made with mixing two colors, and checked the answer by him/herself. These are the result which children got.

The second color activity was "Rainbow in a bag". Children enjoyed beautiful color mixture with light through window. These wonderful ideas are all from Jo. If you haven't seen her blog, you really should look into it. It has full of activities you can enjoy with your children at home or school!

From October, the farm will open a Montessori course for half a year for English-speaking children. If you live near Kawaguchi city and are interested in the course, I have trial lessons you can join on 11th and 19th of September. A few more places are available. Please contact at genzaemon-terakoya(atmark)hotmail.co.jp

genzaemon-terakoya(アットマーク)hotmail.co.jp

Montessori class in July

Last Saturday, we had a monthly Montessori class in the farm. We welcomed two new children this month and they brought more dynamism to the class.

Naturally children started working with materials. Just before entering the class, I reminded all children of the classroom rules like tidying materials away, waiting a turn...etc.The class went very well, harmoniously.

I could see children love cooking activity! Before the class, children and mothers picked up blueberries, eggplant, cucumber, and herbs which were all used for lunch.

This time we made wrap for lunch. Children made their own wrap.

Adults helped the baking part. First, Takako, the kitchen teacher showed how to make wrap. Children were happy to chose the ingredients by themselves.

In the afternoon, we did a color experiment. I showed them how colors(red, yellow, blue) change when two of them get mixed. After this experiment, I gave them finger paints so that they can make experiment, too. Soon they took off their clothes and stated coloring their body:-) We ended up taking the bath all together, but it was fun!

Beautiful colors we got! I like this dynamic painting a lot. The finger paints are easy to make. You need 1 cup of flower, 4 cups of water and some food colorings. First, mix flower and water and then when they are mixed well, cook it for a few minutes.*Be careful not to burn it. When it gets cool, mix food color. If you want a vivid color, you might need to mix a bit of water color paint. Finger paints are quite expensive to buy in Japan,so I'm happy that I could make it at home!

Summer report of Farm

It's been really really hot in Japan. With many people's help, the cleaning of the tomato house was done! Now we are ready for planting seeds, but...can you guess what we have in tomato bed? It's a pineapple! We decided to do a small experiment to grow a tree of pineapples and a tree of avocados in the house this year:-)

By the way, the avocado seed which I planted 1.5 month ago sprouted! I was so happy to see the small sprout! It's amazing this hard cover of a seed somehow cracked open!

I opened the container of Ume prams which I pickled last month. It was such an exciting moment. If something went wrong, there would be a lot of mold in the container. If everything went good, then there should be Ume with plenty of vinegar which oozed out of them.

Fortunately everything was OK. I took the prams out and dried them under the sun for 3 days. This process makes Ume pickles preservable longer. In Japanese diet, Ume pickle is such an inevitable basic item, so I'm happy to have this tasty-hopefully, safe, hand-made pickles.

My vegetables are competing a lot with weeds, but still I harvest eggplants, cucumbers, peppers, and okra. They are very strong!

When I'm not in the field, I work in the guest house/classroom to prepare some materials. I'm truly thankful to some blogs which offer download materials, especially language cards. Thank you, Susanne and Jo! Also I appreciate big help from my friends with sewing, laminating, cutting, setting the computer and painting!

I like how the toilet looks now, though it's still not complete. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the final colors of toilet walls!

More colors

I started some more painting in the guest house this week. This time, I'm painting the walls of toilet. Kyoka was here yesterday to chose the nice combination of colors. It was so much fun to work with her.

I started off with ripping the wall papers. It's been very humid and hot in Japan recently! I have to be creative and think of the ways to cheer me up. Taking before and after-photo is one thing making me realize how much I accomplished, so I took one.

When I finished ripping the papers and painted the glue, I played a bit to take a picture of myself for memory. One day, I'll make a book or story for children how this guest house/future Montessori school got renovated.

Montessori class in June

Last Saturday, we had a Montessori class in the farm. This time, I changed several things. I switched morning and afternoon programs, so mothers and children came to the farm, harvested the vegetables for lunch and quickly moved to Montessori house. Due to this change, we gathered at the farm half an hour earlier, at 9:30 so that children could have 2 hours of Montessori program before lunch. This change worked very well. Children didn't get too tired before Montessori activities and actually in the afternoon, they could run and move till the end of their energy without worrying getting muddy.

Before the class, I was a bit nervous how children behave in the classroom. Last month I showed them how we tidy up materials, how we wait a turn in the classroom...etc. They seemed very excited last month and I needed a lot of help from mothers to make them tidy up things.

One month has passed since the last class. I wondered how much they remember the rules. However, my worry was swept away at the moment children came into the classroom. A boy said "I'll try this" pointing at red rods and went off for bringing a mat for him. A girl was looking at him carrying red rods and suddenly said "Oh, you shouldn't carry them together. One at a time!". You can't imagine how much I was amazed by them!! This girl smiled and said to me "I'll go for watering the plant."

2 hours in the morning passed very calmly. One big change during the activities was parents stayed in the study room and took turns to come and observe the class. I think too many adults in a class gives children the feeling that they are seen all the time. This time, there were only me and a friend of mine who offered her help in kitchen. She was busy preparing lunch for all and I tried to sit down in a corner of a classroom as much as possible. Surely children were main actors/actresses in a class this time.

Children took turns to be a helper in kitchen. One washed cucumbers and cut them with knife. One rolled out the pizza dough and added some sauce and toppings. One prepared the table for lunch. One went to the study room and called parents for lunch.

We had a pizza, tomato soup, tomato bread, cucumber salad for lunch. A boy asked me "Is this a cucumber I harvested before?" and when I said yes, he just smiled satisfactory.

After lunch, we went back to the farm. We all dug potatoes up! It was a fun activity, well, especially for mothers. I could see so much concentration of them:-)

Even though it's still the second time to hold a monthly class here, I learned a lot of things. The biggest learning is that you never can learn thing until you actually do it. Each time I think a lot and spend much time to prepare the class, but still I find things to improve or change in a classroom or in management. It's a long way for finding my perfect form of Montesori group, but I enjoy my class getting better each time and me getting more experienced in school management.
